[AZ-Observing] Re: Herschel 400 Awards in Arizona

Tom,
Actually at the last SAC meeting, Jack Jones was presented with Herschel 400
Certificate 258. He's probably just not on whatever list you're looking at
yet. No small feat! Just thought I'd let you know.

Subject: [AZ-Observing] Herschel 400 Awards in Arizona

At the last SAC meeting, Joe Goss was presented with Herschel 400
Certificate #220. This led me to wonder how many Arizona amateurs completed
the list, and which clubs are the most prolific.

The Herschel 400 page is at:
http://www.astroleague.org/al/obsclubs/herschel/hers400.html
and the list of awardee is at:
http://www.astroleague.org/al/obsclubs/herschel/her400wn.html

They have given out 262 awards through this past August. Due to some
numbering mistakes, and the fact that the first four awards are "number 0",
they're up to #255. The first two awards, given out in April of 1981,
belong to Dave and Brenda Branchett. Brenda still administers the program.

Saguaro Astronomy Club ranks second in number of awards, with 11. The top
club is the Texas Astronomical Society of Dallas, who have 15 Herschel 400
certificates. Rounding out the top 5 are the Astronomical Society of Kansas
City, the Atlanta Astronomy Club, and the Westminster Astronomical Society
(!), with 10, 9, and 8, respectively.

Other Arizona clubs are not well represented. Hazel Lawler is the only
entry for TAAA, although Erich Karkoschka is listed as having one of the 24
"Herschel II" certificates. Two are credited to Tucson Astronomical League,
and EVAC, 225 members strong, still has yet to see its first.

Back to SAC, most of the 11 recipients are still active in the club. The
first two SAC certificates are numbers 5 and 6. Before Joe, the most recent
award was given out to Ken Reeves in 1998 after a five-year wait.
