The story may be prone to exaggeration. There is a video of the process of getting the mirror up to Mount Graham. There had to be a DPS escort because the mirror case took up both lanes of I-10 (not to mention getting the truck out of the area near campus), and that was also why they started out (at least) in pre-dawn hours. It still took 'em two long days to get the thing up the mountain.
