I too had a fun time at this years SSSG and I'm glad it was rescheduled.
Though it was a little too hot in the daytime to get any sleep, the nights
were just the perfect temperature - didn't even need the jacket.
My attempts at photography were once again learning experiences but good
ones. And I didn't intend to get any great results but to test my equipment
and films. A couple of shots of Jupiter and Saturn came out OK, but I still
have to work on my focusing, just not good enough with the eye. I got the
bands of Jupiter and the ring of Saturn but little other detail.
The main thing I was trying out was the red response of Royal Gold 200. I
had tried Royal Gold 400 a few weeks ago and found it had almost no red
response. In a 1 minute exposure of M-42, Royal Gold 200 also had no red
response. I am quickly running out of good film to use. I had a roll of E200
slide film but never got to it, maybe next trip.
I also tried out a roll of Fuji 1600 just to see what'd I'd get. I got a
ton of stars in Omega Centuri but they trailed in a 3 minute unguided
exposure in alt/az mode. Can't wait till my wedge shows up and I get some
guided shots of this.
Thanks to Bill for the company under my wind whipped canopy and helping me
keep it nailed to the ground. I think I did more solar observing than deep
sky. The sun put on quite a show both days. The Coronado filter has paid for
itself a hundred times over already.
Oh yeah, did anyone care to try and figure out my brain teaser question?
Which was "If you decided to do a Messier Marathon only in numerical order,
what would be the least number of days you could do it in and when would be
the best day to start?" Jeff Vandecar
