Porrima (Gamma Virginis) is a binary star with a 169-year period. Periastron,
the closest approach of the two stars in the binary, will happen some time this
month. The pair is split by less than 0.4", and changing position angle
rapidly. The bright double is unaffected by light pollution, so this is a good
backyard project. While our scopes probably won't split the two stars, they
may show elongation.
One person who is following Porrima closely is Chris Taylor the UK.
