[AZ-Observing] GOTO at Marathons....

Hey all,

Looking through the messages, it's clear to see we have a division of opinions.
Allow me to give my view.

In the 2001 AAMM, I was using a EQ mounted 8"f/6 with manual setting circles.
I thought the circles would allow me to offset from bright stars and such, but
as it turned out, it wasn't necessary. I surprised myself by capturing all
objects just by starhopping. It was most rewarding, and I was smiling ear to
ear knowing that I was now a part of an elite group.

Now fast forward...I now have a 15" f/5 with DSCs. And I'm torn between using
them and not using them at the 2003 AAMM. On one side, people are saying that
I'm not "really" doing the marathon if I use the DSC's. On the other side, I
know what I am capable of, and maybe I'd like to make it a fun night out with
other observers.

Point is this....who's business is it really if someone does/doesn't use DSC's
or GOTO's? The sense of pride, accomplishment, and confidence should be the
real measuring stick for all this. I know that I won't be quite as proud of
MYSELF (could care less about everyone else! ;-P ) if I use the DSC's this
next year, so maybe I'll forgo their use. BUT, maybe I'll be tired, or have
had a mentally exhausting week, or whatever, then I'll use the DSC's so I can
relax a little bit, have fun and enjoy the experience, which is really what
it's all about, right? Either way, each individual will make their own choice,
and if they have fun and are proud of what they did, then we should be happy
for them.

Great discussion everyone....

Thad
