My cheap laser pointer with new batteries is readily visible to my target audience -- who are situated in a radius of 10 feet or so -- and quickly becomes invisible as one moves farther off-axis. *That* is the appropriate level for a laser pointer at a dark site. Even if one is not doing astroimaging, a laser that is still very bright at a range of 10 telescopes down the line an unwelcome intrusion. Having said that, I will admit that I have become completely dependent on a laser pointer for giving public sky shows.
