[AZ-Observing] Re: GCSP North Rim Report

Did you see any funky green glows overhead right at midnight Friday?

Just got back from the North Rim Grand Canyon Public Star Party after 3
nights
of observing. The North Rim GCSP is fine and well, even with the fires all
around. All smoke has blown away from us luckily, but the trip from Jacob
Lake
was stalled for about an hour because of one-way escorts thru the smoke. It
had been closed for 4 hours so I'm not complaining. Got good pictures thru
the
car window of the firemen at work. The fire was right up to the road but
was
mostly ground fire here and from a managed fire they said. On the way out
there was another fire this side of Jacob Lake high on the ridge and I just
hoped it wasn't getting down to the road ahead.

Strangely the temps at the Lodge were quite warm for 8200 ft elevation and
tho
windy during the day it always pretty much settled down by sunset and
became
calm later in the night. We had about 200 very appreciative viewers a night
under very dark skies with the Milky Way just jumping out at you when you
stepped onto the porch from the Great Room of the Lodge. We had a scope or
two
on the west side to see the Saturn-Mars conjunction as well.

Morris "Mojo" and Jane Houston Jones from JPL and Barry Peckham of
Light-Box
Telescopes were there and Mojo gave an interesting talk on galaxies in the
Auditorium above the Sun Porch. The lodge still has the antiquated wiring
but
they do have their own digital projector!
