Scope #5 operational! I guess I must face facts and consider myself an
ATM, five scopes completed and another sitting around as parts. "Regalo
de Estrellas" saw first light tonight, Mars of course. The scope is a
6" f/5.4 classic small dobsonian built as a gift for my parents.
Finished with a Schwaar mirror that Sam sent me from the estate. Not a
bad mirror, maybe not one of Pierre's best, but fine for general use.
First rate parts, 3/4" maple plywood base, aluminum irrigation pipe
tube, astrosystems spider and crayford focuser. A fun little scope to
build and use.
Mars wasn't too bad tonight, with the short focal length (830mm) I could
only get 173x, but plenty of features visible after I fiddled with the
collomation a while. A light blue filter brought out much more detail.
I could have used more power with the conditions, not bad for the center
of Tucson. I hope to be out with the 18" at Empire this Saturday for a
night hunting H400 objects.
