Then I take it I won't be seeing you at Vekol tonight?

Subject: [EVAC] Globe site
Just got back from two nights near the EVAC Globe observing site. Arrived
Friday at 1700 to find 6 RV's with at least 12 ATV racing around with dirt
flying. Drove around the site, fairly level with open areas and trees. Limited
viewing below 30 degrees above the horizon due to trees. Decided read quick
this was not the place to be this weekend. Went on up the road to FR 645 and
drove 1.5 miles up hill and found a site with room for 4-6 cars. Not very
level had to shim one tripod leg with a 2x4 to level. From this site the sky
was fairly black above 30 degrees. A Mt. to the west blocked out the light
dome of Phoenix. The tail of Scorpius just skimmed the horizon. As the Milky
Way rose I thought I saw clouds rising, then realized it was the Milky Way. By
2300 the great rift in the Milky Way stood out. I could see 6 stars with direct
vision in the bowl of the Big Dipper. I would rate this area as better than
Vekol Rd site, but not as good as the 5 Mile Meadow site. Transparency was
7/10 and seeing was between 6-7/10 depending on the wind both nights. It was
very windy Saturday during the day, but the wind died down around 2300 both
nights. I doubt I will ever use the Vekol Site again. This location has no
illegal or drug traffic and no border patrol running up and down the road
stirring up dust. The site was only 10 miles farther than going to Vekol Rd.
