Howdy all;
Well, the double shadow transit happened just like Guide 7 said it would. The
shadow of Europa was ahead of the GRS as it went across the ball of Jupiter and
as that interresting grouping got well past the center of the disk, the shadow
of Io made its way onto the disk of Jupiter. The "black drop" effect was seen
as the shadow of Io was getting clearly onto the disk. This means that for a
minute or so, the black shadow blended with the limb of the planet and made it
difficult to say when the shadow was completely on the disk. Both shadows were
tracking along within the South Equatorial Band. There was a nice, dark barge
in the Northern Eq. Band.
This observation was made among some clouds, so I rated the seeing as 4/10.
All this is using my 7 inch f/15 Meade Maksutov from my backyard observatory in
Metro Phoenix, Arizona. I used 175X and 225X with yellow and orange filters.
Not a good night, but an interresting view.
Clear Skies to us all;
Steve Coe
