Yes, I think that since we've seen a similar outburst in
the same object 115 years ago, this wasn't a one-off event,
like the comet got hit by a small asteroid or something.
I don't know enough to say how real comet experts would try to
explain this. Remember, we sent a copper plug out and let a
comet run into it, and by comparison almost nothing happened!
I'd recommend keeping a nightly watch on Holmes, and in a
week we'll know how it evolves with no speculation required.
