The global aerosol maps published daily by a group at Goddard
Space Flight Center has been showing a northeast Asian dust
event likely headed in our direction:

While the vast swath of dust over northern Africa is pretty typical
for this season, the heavy concentration in the upper-right
corner is not. This stuff has been making its way gradually
across the Pacific (i.e. to the upper-left corner of the aerosol
plot) the last week, and has been making itself obvious since
last weekend. Expect pretty high extinction and dim views
of things for the next week at least---depending on how the upper-level
winds push the material around.
