[AZ-Observing] Re: Arizona Observing?

Alan,

I found battery-operated fluorescent lights at Home Depot. They had
blacklight tubes in the bin next to them, so I bought one and replaced
the white light tube and it works great for finding scorpions. I had to
put electrical tape on the top side to block the UV light from getting
to my eyes. Scorpions glow from ~20 ft away. I went to Buckeye Hills a
few years ago after we had abandoned it as an observing site and the
place was overrun with them. The big ones won't kill ya, they just stay
put and wait for food to come by. Dangerous are the little brown ones
(Centruroides, the bark scorpion)that crawl around at night looking for
food and hide in your shoes, clothes, bed, or sleeping bag towards
morning. They won't kill ya either, but are very painful and you're more
likely to encounter them. If there's one there may be a lot around.
Shake it baby!

I would take Thad's advice on Joe.
