Although we're straying off-topic: thanks to Joe for the link to
the Web image painting. The original is close to 2 meters square (the
two guys are life-size), painted onto two joined boards. Among the things
noticeable in the painting is the arrangement of the artifacts on the
two tables the guys are leaning against: on top are instruments related to
celestial measurement, on the smaller table are earthly cultural instruments
(spherical globe not made in England at the time, lute, written music, etc),
and that anamorphic skull protruding at the bottom. You can know all the
wonders of the universe, but you die and rot in the end. Very Dutch, very
16th Century. Could the date simply be when it was finished, rather than
having some astronomical significance?
