Steve,
Not sure which comet you mean. SMP10 shows 2 Linear comets that should/may
be visible this Thur: C/2003 K4, mag 8.9, which is rising in the east and
C/2003 H1, mag 12.4, which is setting in the west. I guess the one that
sets around 7:30pm on Thursday as noted by Randy P is C/2002 T7, mag 0.5,
but I don't know if that one will be visible since its still pretty light
then and the comet is real low :)
In any event C/2003 K4 rises in the east about 8pm AZ time on Thurs and is
located about 12 deg below (east) Vega. It is only about 9 deg alt at 9pm
when it is good and dark but should be easier around 11pm when it is about
30 deg alt.
C/2003 H1, which is awful dim at mag 12.4, is at about 32 deg alt at sunset
Thur located about 4 deg south of M48. By full dark Thur, 9pm, this comet
is about 15 deg alt so it may be visible in a big scope.
The bright one, C/2002 T7, hits the horizon in the west about 7:18pm on Thur
and at that time the Sun is still fully above the horizon so I don't think
there is any chance it can be seen but I never tried anything like that so I
don't know for sure. For whatever its worth SMP10 says C/2002 T7 sets at
19:20:34 on Thur, 5/20/04, 19:52:09 on Fri and 20:20:36 on Sat, slightly
different times than Guide.
If you are still trying SMP you can download Comet data from the internet
with a couple of mouse clicks and display them on the star map. SMP also
displays very neat ephemeris tables showing pretty much any info you like
for any list of dates.
Regards,
Bill Wood
