Then there's the possibility of smoke. Even if the forest is open, Buck
Butte is about 20 miles from the Brins fire. If the winds are right (or
wrong, actually) you will have smoke over the observing site.
Sorry to say, it looks like this weekend is out. I am listening to the
announcement that Coconino NF is to be closed at 8AM Friday on the news as I
type this . . .
How about a desert session for Saturday night?

Another point just occurred to me, there is only one road leading
in and out of the site. Rick and I took the 229 service road to the west
and a 4X4 is needed or at the very lest a vehicle with high clearance.
My Xterra made it through and it was a very bumpy ride. If we were to be
cut off by a lightning caused fire it would create a liability that the
forest service is not willing to take. Thus I think our chances are slim
on obtaining a permit. A night at the towers site will get us away from
all the fires, but it will be very hot.
