Lonely in your Nightmare

"Because you're lonely in your nightmare let me in
Because there's heat beneath your winter let me in"
The stack of medical files on her desk and the surrounding chairs was
getting to be overwhelming. Just when she thought she'd have things on the
manageable side, one trip to have dinner or lunch, and *poof* the pile would
again accumulate. No news was most certainly not good news concerning the
Avalon's twin, the USS Allegiance, which was now almost dormant in a nearby
region
of space.
She was troubled by the sister ship more and more as the hours turned
into a day, then two. Oddly, they had discovered very little of the crew
aboard...even more oddly, no one seemed to know where the crew had gone. Her
next
goal was to schedule a meeting with the reclusive Captain Ketchum. Since
their initial meeting and subsequent staff meeting, she'd had very little
contact
with Ketchum. As Chief Medical Officer, she needed to have more frequent
discussions, especially when the CMO of the Allegiance was MIA.
Felicity pondered as she slept what had (or was?) going on over on
that sleep. Her images and glimpses were dark and somber. The haunting melody
of an ancient Terran musical group rang through her mind almost as an
accompaniment. She was pacing the decks in a dress uniform, hunting for fallen
Allegiance crew, "Hello? Is anyone there? I've come to help?" Felicity saw
herself
carrying a medical kit and a tricorder. As she would approach shadows on the
walls of the decks, they would fade away from her.
"Even on the darkest night when empty promise means empty hand
And soldiers coming home like shadows turning red
And when the lights of hope are fading quickly then look to me
I'll be your homing angel I'll be in your head"
"Because you're lonely in your nightmare let me in
And there's heat beneath your winter let me in"
There was something ominous about this dream, but Felicity felt
herself unable to wake. She watched herself press on, drawn to the Medical
bay...
all the while, noting the shredded doors and torn wall panels. What had done
this to the crew? Why couldn't she see anything.
"I see the delta traces living lonely out on the limb
And a passing glimmer warm beneath your skin
Please tread gently on the ground when all around you earth turns to fire
Only get a second chance when danger's on the wind"
Felicity walked into Sickbay to find the bodies...hundreds of dead
bodies, in various states of decay. It was too much. What had caused this?
Who
were these ensigns, lieutenants, men, women, children, old and young that had
agreed to serve aboard this ship. The Federation was supposed to keep them
safe, out of harm's way whenever and wherever possible.
"Must be lucky whether when you find the kind of wind that you need
Come on show me all the light and shade that made your name
I know you've got it in your head I've seen that look before
You've built your refuge turns you captive all the same"
Felicity finally found herself awake and not surprising, sweating, out
of breath and absolutely terrified. She decided she needed to talk to the
Captain...now. But why? She wasn't a telepath or even empathic. What was
going on? Whatever it was, there was a large pit in her stomach to go along
with
the dreams...they needed to search the Allegiance from stem to stern to find
whatever or whoever was giving off these emotions.
"Computer, locate Captain Ketchum." In a moment, the computer happily
chimed in return. "Mr. Ketchum is located near his quarters on Deck 2."
Still in her nightdress, Felicity moved as quickly as she could
towards Deck 2 and to figure out how to explain to the Captain what needed done
and
not have him think she was a complete loon. Perhaps she could do the
explaining, but the thoughts he'd have, well, she couldn't control those. The
song
still haunted her as she entered the lift and made her way to the deck:
"Because your lonely in your nightmare let me in
And it's barren in your garden let me in
Because there's heat beneath your winter let me in
Because you're so lonely in your nightmare let me in
And it's cold out on the stone range let me in
Because there's heat beneath your winter let me in "
