<USS Avalon> "Within Reach"

"Within Reach"
By: Lt. Melanie Redgrave

A light scent of juniper wafted in through the open window of the small
hotel room that Melanie was staying in. She could have returned to Elijah’s
place
in Tennessee, but she felt it was unfair to show up so late. It had been
nearly one in the morning by the time she’d left Georgia and her friend Eliza

Mae. She had wanted to take the long walk back to the city and to the hotel,
but
Georgia wouldn’t hear of it, so Melanie arranged to have herself beamed from
Eliza Mae’s to the hotel. As soon as she’d settled into her room she sent
a
message to Elijah to let him know she was ok and that she’d been able to
talk to Georgia. She’d even told him that Georgia had promised to have some
things sent to her that would help explain more.

The message had ended with Melanie telling him that she needed another day
or two and then she’d come back to his place just as she’d promised. For
the
first time in her career, Melanie was grateful for the long stretched out
amounts of time that it took Command to get anything done. She knew that as
long
as Kendrick was out there and everything was unresolved on Avalon, she had
time to resolve her own issues plus spend time with Elijah.

Melanie laid wide eyed in the over padded, over covered bed trying to
process everything Georgia had told her. She’d replayed the whole night in
her head
over and over and it seemed that each time she had she picked up something
new. She smiled when she thought about how Georgia had told her what her name
had been and that her parents thought of her as their little sunshine. She
rolled over on her side and hugged her pillow, still smiling, as she recalled
the stories of how Skyler had adored her baby sister. Her smile quickly faded
as Melanie wondered if Skyler would ever remember any of that. Suddenly
knowing that once upon a time Skyler had not only known who she was but loved
her,
seemed to made the pain worse.

She knew that she needed to give Skyler time. She also knew that Skyler may
never recover her memories. Perhaps T’Arah had been right. Perhaps she did
look for that happy ever after ended far to much. At least now she knew more
about who she was then she did a week ago.

Her mind was still and quiet for a moment and Melanie was just starting to
fall into an emotionally drained sleep, when another part of her conversion
with Georgia replayed in her mind. She’d said that the last time she and
Skyler
had seen her was while she was in the hospital. The memory of Georgia saying
that trigged part of the conversation she’d had with Elijah that morning.
He’
d asked if she’d been sick or if she needed to be with her mother for any
reason.

Melanie got up from the bed and made her way over to the small desk with the
computer terminal. It only took a few moments and a quick connection through
her comm badge and Melanie was linked with the Avalon’s computer. “Computer

access any known medical records, Federation, civilian and... Betazed.. for
a child named Soliel. Parents names are Celeste and Maddox. Display results
on this terminal.”

“It will take approximately four hours to complete the search.”

Melanie nodded. “Copy all results to my computer onboard ship as well as
displaying them here.”

With the computer working on her behalf. Melanie went back to bed. She was
close to the answers she was looking for, she could feel it.
