<USS Avalon> "Welcome Home"

Welcome Home

by Lt. Sussanna Jameson

Cold and dark, the door to her office called to her from the main science lab.
Sighing, Anna drifted over to it. The last shift were just finishing up their
work, the next lot making ready to take over. Ants, she thought. Little worker
ants and I'm the Queen. Stopping an inch from the entrance, she just stared at
her office from the outside. Nothing that she could see had changed.

Her head was still fuzzy from traveling and her bones ached, but that was all
perfectly acceptable. In fact she liked feeling it, almost as if it reminded
her of the time spent at the University of Alpha Centauri A. Who would have
known that one week could change so much? Her whole life, in fact. Talk about a
whirl-wind romance, just wasn't in it. One week at the conference and then a
week's honeymoon. He was so very charming, interesting and funny. Actually,
kind of disarming, like he looks at the universe in a different way and for
those brief minutes while you're with him, you can see what he sees. Smiling at
the memories, she stared off into nothing.

Sergeant Major Greg Williams. A girly giggle escaped her. He was about 15 years
her senior, with greying brown hair and blue eyes. The lines on his face only
added to his appeal, giving him the appearance of his maturity and wisdom. Her
heart skipped again when she glanced down at the wedding band on her finger. It
felt odd, like it wasn't supposed to be there, but she had a feeling that, like
the man she'd married, her life would adapt to the ring as well.

It was all as she'd left it barely two weeks ago, almost as if it was waiting
for Lieutenant Sussanna Jameson to return home. Only Sussanna isn't coming back
ever again.

The woman who had left for that conference wasn't the one that now stood with
the buzz of the Science department around her. She would never be that girl
again. Taking the final step to the door, it swooshed open to present its
loniless to her. The lights flickered on as she approached the desk. And,
suddenly, she stopped short.

Long stemmed and velvet red, a single rose lay across her console. Her heart
fluttered as she took one tentative step toward it. A note was attached. It
read: welcome home.

She lifted it to her lips, brushing it gently over them. With a smile, she sat
behind her desk. Her peace lasted barely a moment.

"All hands, this is Colonel Shimbrodus... Red Alert, Battle stations", came the
voice over the comm, "Major General Murgo to the bridge. We have engaged the
Risans."

Dropping the flower, she bolted to her feet and was in a turbolift up to the
Bridge before she could think.
