Waking the Avalon - Part 5
Three Days Ago = Vega Prime Research Project Meeting Room
Jenna stormed into the office. "Dammit, people, what the hell are you doing
out there?"
Admiral Taggert rose slowly, the smile on his face not reaching his eyes.
"Gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to Dr. Jenna Correlli. She heads up our
bio-weapons research program."
The officers gathered around the table nodded respectfully in turn, many
looking more than a little nervous. This woman’s reputation was almost as
frightening as that of Admiral Taggert himself. .
"We were just discussing how to retrieve what you lost, Doctor," Taggert
told her. Though his tone was friendly, his words seemed to take on a dangerous
edge.
"What I lost?" Jenna huffed. " First Starfleet fails to adequately guard
them, and now I understand the first ship dispatched to retrieve them has
failed."
A stunned murmur arose from around the table. They'd only just received word
of the loss of the Renaissance themselves. The news had come encrypted over
a secure channel, no less. How did she find out so quickly?
"That is true, however," Jack responded, his tone pacifying, seemingly
unfazed by her knowledge. "We expected that." The murmur from the others grew
louder, though he seemed not to notice. "These are weapons, after all, that
we’re
trying to retrieve, however innocent they might appear. We'll just have to
dispatch another ship, that’s all. The Renaissance survivors will be collected
and our missing property will be retrieved. All will be well. Now, Doctor, if
you please…" he gestured toward the door, the look in his eyes forbidding
argument. "Do return to your work and let us get on with ours."
"Remember, nobody is to board that ship," Jenna told the assembled officers,
her gaze narrowing. "…I want the full contents of that ship returned, but
barring that, I insist upon the retrieval of the two portable units. And the
cryo-tanks. I must have those back intact and unmolested. The research those
tanks contain cannot be duplicated. I know. I've tried."
"Understood, my dear," Jack agreed as he led her to the door. "Trust me.
We'll get them back."
Jenna nodded, trusting Taggert to do as he promised. He knew as well as she
did what was truly at stake.
The admiral turned back toward the assembled officers as the doors closed
behind him, his expression hard. "Now, gentlemen. Find me a ship with a crew
capable of achieving the impossible. Our wayward little ship and all aboard it
must be retrieved quickly, and completely intact. A second failure is simply
not an option." Then he added, almost as an afterthought, "Oh, and find the Ren
’s survivors as well. Assuming of course there are any." Turning his back to
them as if they'd suddenly ceased to interest him, he waved a hand toward
the door. "Dismissed."
