Waking the Avalon - Part 3
Five Days Ago = Bridge = SS Renaissance
"Hailing the craft," Ensign Bentley said. After a pause, he shook his head.
"No response, sir."
"Increasing speed," Lt. Commander Theil announced flatly, scanning and
rescanning the vessel as it seemed to lack any discernable source of power.
"They’
re running, Captain."
"Oh, no you don’t." Lorentz said, rising from his chair. "Give me a glancing
blow of their port bow. I want them to know we’re serious."
"Aye, sir," Lt. Cutler answered, hurrying to comply.
"Hail them again," Lorentz ordered as the small craft on their screen reeled
from the blow they’d struck. "This is Captain Lorentz of the USS
Renaissance. Surrender your vessel and prepare to be boarded."
"No, Captain Lorentz." The child’s voice seemed to reverberate from all
around them. "Let us go now and we will forgive your hostile actions toward
us."
"Captain," Lt. Commander Theil asked uncertainly. Surely they weren’t
pursuing children, were they?
"Don’t be deceived," Lorentz reminded her softly before replying, "I’m
afraid we can’t do that."
"Captain. We don’t want to have to hurt anyone. Please? Are you sure we can’
t change your mind?" the child’s voice asked.
"Quite certain," Lorentz answered impatiently, gesturing toward the weapons
console to prepare another burst.
"You leave us no choice, Captain," the voice responded sadly.
Before another word could be said, both ships were attacked.
"Breen raiders, Captain. It appears they know about the weapons, as well,"
Theil announced, as the ship rocked around them.
"Assuming they aren’t the ones who took them in the first place." Bentley
muttered.
"Return fire," Lorentz ordered, then turned to Theil. "Status?"
The ship lurched again. "Sheilds down to 68 %. Weapons unresponsive." She
looked up at Lorentz solemnly. "They knew where to hit us, Captain."
At the next hit, the screen went dead. Ships systems began to overload one
after the other as the temperature rose rapidly.
Lt. Cutler cried out as his console began melting right in front of his
eyes.
"God’s save us," Captain Lorentz whispered before falling dead to the
rapidly dissolving deck.
The God’s abstained.
