<USS Avalon> "Two Ole Women" Georgia Lewis

"Two Ole Women"
Jr Lt Geargia Lewis

Georgia and Eliza Mae were sitting around the oak table in Eliza's
dining room. There was a Pecan Pie in the middle of the table that had yet to
be
touched. Both women were just sitting, not knowing what to say. There were
tear stains on Georgia's face and Eliza Mae knew what the cause of them was.

"So, when was ya gonna tell me 'bout Miss Skyler and Miss Melanie? I
have never known you to keep secrets from me, 'specially sumthin like this. I
don't know if'n I know you Georgia Lewis?"

Georgia looked at her oldest and dearest friend, and wondered why she
had kept the secret for so long. Her long black fingers were shaking as she
placed them on the table.

"Look 'ole woman if you is gonna hassle me 'bout everything then I am
just gonna get up and leave. You know me 'bout as well as I know myself if not
better, so don't give no bull 'bout you not knowing who I am. I'm truly sorry
for not telling you all this, but I made a promise and I ain't one to go an
break promies, you know that."

Eliza nodded knowing that what her friend was saying was the truth. She
had never known Georgia to break a promise, no matter how hard it was. She
truly felt bad for her friend and for Miss Skyler. She knew that Georgia's
heart was breakin a little with each day that passed with no word from Skyler.

"I know you 'ole fuddy duddy. I just wish you could have told me. I
woulda kept your secret. That Skyler she means as much to me as she does to
you.
This is all just a big shock to me that's all. Besides you wont leave 'cause
you is waitin to see if Miss Melanie is going to come back."

There was silence between the two 'ole women that seemed to drag on like
molassess on cornbread. Eliza started to cut the pie and put a piece 'afore
each of them along with some Ice Tea. Georgia just looked at the pie and
started to cry. Eliza reached over and placed her hands on Georgia's.

"I knows this is hard for you, but Miss Skyler will come 'round. You
knows that one never could stay mad at you for long. She just needs time and
some space. I bet she is tryin to figure out how to talk to you thats all."

"Do ya really think so Eliza? I sure do miss her. I never meant to hurt
anyone, truly I didn't. What am I gonna do if'n she don't want anythin more
to do with me? I don't think I could stand that. You and her is all I got
since Henry died."

Eliza looked at her friend and could see she was in a world of hurt. She
got up and stood next to Georgia, pulling the woman's head to her bososm.
She held her tight tryin to comfort her friend.

"Oh honey, everythin will work out. You'll see. Miss Skyler knows how
much you love her and now you got Miss Melanie. Besides you ain't never gettin
rid of me. I know we argue and fuss at each other, but we would both be lost
without the other. You and me, well we is family and family sticks together
no matter what." She held Georgia tighter and a few tears fell down her face
as well.

Georgia pulled back and looked up at her friend. They had been through
alot togehter and they would muddle through this as well.

"Now don't let this go to your head 'ole woman, but God blessed me the
day we met. I just don't know what I would do without you?"

"You ain't never gonna have to find out ya 'ole fuddy duddy. Now let's
stop all this boo hoo'in and eat some of my famous Pecan Pie."

The two women ate their pie in silence each knowing the other was
thinkin that it was their famous Pecan pie. Neither one would admit to the
other
whose was better. Georgia was just glad to have an 'ole friend as special as
Eliza Mae.
