<USS Avalon> To Sleep (takes place before 'Lessons relearned')

By Doctor Georgia Lewis and Lt jg T'Leara

T'Leara paced in a very unVulcanlike manner for a good while before finally
conceding that her mind would not slow down unassisted that night. If she had
any hope of sleeping, which she needed to do if she hoped to function
efficiently the next morning, she would require something to help. Reluctantly,
she headed off to sickbay in search of someone who might provide a sleep aid
without asking too many questions.

Sitting in her very, very corner office Georgia was beginning to feel as though
she really didn't belong on the Avalon after all. They already had two other
doctors. Dr. Mahler the CMO and Dr. Cazook, she really didn't know where Cazook
fit in. Other than to take care of Skyler. Perhaps she should rethink this
whole idea of returning to the Avalon as a Doctor.

As she sat there she pondered many things. How her life had changed in the past
three years. How Skyler had changed. It seemed everything had changed around
her. She was always told change was good, but was it really. This she didn't
know.

The lights had been dimmed as there was essentially no one in sickbay other
than herself and one aid. She was supposed to be doing paper work but her mind
was concentrating on other things. She needed a break. Getting up she made her
way across sickbay to the replicator. She ordered a hot tea with a splash of
lemon. As she waited for the drink to materialize she thought she heard the
sound of the doors opening.

T'Leara waited patiently for the doctor to retrieve her beverage before
addressing her, preferring not to be the cause of the woman possibly burning
herself. Somehow she doubted that would garner support for both assistance and
discretion.

Turning towards the sounds of the door Georgia noticed the Vulcan woman
standing nearby. "Well, I thought I heard someone enter. Welcome to Sickbay.
But I suppose you already know that you are here. I am Dr. Georgia Lewis,
condemed to the night shift as you can see. So, is there something I can do for
you or are you just out wandering the ship?"

Taking her tea Georgia started to walk to the main area of sickbay, wondering
if the Vulcan woman was going to follow her or if she was indeed just wandering
the halls.

T'Leara followed her, intrigued by the manner in which she introduced herself.
"I am T'Leara. It appears I shall require assistance obtaining rest this
evening, and thought perhaps to obtain a sleep inducer if I may."

"Well, it seems to be a great deal of restlessness going on around here. I
myself would love to be asleep at this moment but.....it doesn't appear as
though it is going to be happening anytime soon. So, a sleep inducer is what
you seek."

Georgia was not one to just hand out drugs if there were other ways to solve
the problem. She had found that too many people relied on drugs instead of
trying something natural.
"T'Leara is it? Have you tried anything else to help you sleep? Perhaps a cup
of good hot tea to relax you. Or even some good hard exercise to produce those
natural endorphins to help you in your quest for sleep. If nothing else it
might just wear you out enough so you can sleep."

"I have, Doctor," T'Leara confirmed. "Chamomile tea, meditation, and exercise.
I assure you that medical intervention was my very last option."

Looking at the Vulcan, Georgia had no doubt that she had indeed tried
everything possible. From her past experiences she knew Vulcans avoided
medications whenever possible. Getting up from her desk she walked casually
over to the medicine cabinet. Inputing her security code she opened the door
and took out a hypo.

She could feel the eyes of the woman watching her every move. Turning she faced
T'Leara. "I have here the inducer you desire.. Are you absolutely sure this is
what you want to do?"

"If I am to function as I should at work as I am required, I must first sleep,
at least on occasion. Failure to do so puts said work at risk. While I can go
without sleep for several days with no ill effects, I fear I am quite past that
point." T'Leara answered quietly. "Thus, it would seem 'want' is irrelevant. I
must sleep, and I cannot do so without assistance. To refuse the inducer would,
therefore, be illogical."

Smiling Georgia programmed the hypo with the proper dosage for a Vulcan female.
"Far be it for me to cause you to do anything illogical." Taking the hypo,
Georgia pressed it against the Vulcans neck and listened for the hiss that told
her the inducer had been applied. "I suggest you make it a quick trip to your
quarters before the inducer begins to take affect. If you need anything else, I
will be here in my little hole in the wall."

"Thank you, Doctor, for both your assistance and your discretion." T'Leara said
before making her way back to her quarters and, hopefully, a few hours sleep.
