<USS Avalon> Time At Home

Time At Home

Caine walked into her quarters and sighed. She felt like she hadn?t slept in
weeks, which wasn?t too far from the truth. Ever since Garrett had handed her
that PADD of information close to a month ago, Caine had been struggling with
what she had learned.

Garrett had found Hannah?s grandmother. Granted, Caine had asked Garrett to
search for any possible living relatives of Hannah, but deep down, she had
truly hoped that the search would leave them empty handed.

Moving quietly into her bedroom to change into more comfortable clothing, Caine
patted Hannah?s head who was sitting on at the table coloring. The babysitter
spent a few minutes telling Caine about the days events while she changed out
of her uniform and walked back into the living room where Hannah and the
babysitter were.

After a short little conversation the babysitter was on her way out and Caine
joined Hannah at the table. Without much promting, Hannah began to expond on
the day she had had. Caine had to laugh to herself, the child barely took time
to breath between each sentence.

Enjoying Hannah?s chatting, Caine set about getting ready a dinner for the two
of them, her mind drifting in and out of Hannah?s story about puppies. No
matter what Caine did, her thoughts kept returning to Hannah?s grandmother and
the best course of action to take. It was killing her to do the right thing,
but she knew she needed to contact the grandmother and to tell Hannah about her
grandmother.

The young girl had come to mean a lot in Caine?s life and she didn?t want to
lose the child but she also knew it wasn?t her place to keep her, especially
with living relatives probably looking for her.

Clearing the table of coloring books and crayons, Caine sat down with Hannah to
enjoy dinner, silently wishing Javan was there to spend time with them, also so
that she could seek his advice in dealing with the Hannah situation.
Unfortunately he wasn?t around and hadn?t been for a while, Caine was beginning
to wonder when he was coming back.

Forcing herself to forget about her more depressing thoughts, Caine instead
focused on her dinner and on the hyper active child in front of her.
