The Visit
by Lieutenant Commander Anthony Manson
It was a warm day. A really warm day. And unfortunately, no breeze had swept
by. The windows were open, but it was still warm. What made it worse was the
booming of shock from a woman who nearly spit her drink all over the table. She
stared at him, not really comprehending what he just said for the first few
moments. The utter shock on her face twisted into anger also, combining both
expressions to nothing he ever saw done. But he figured if anyone could do it,
she could. Just as she placed her cup back down on the table, she yelled, again:
"You what?!"
Anthony blew an impatient breath. He was starting to think this was a mistake,
telling his sister about the recent events that went on. But if it wasn?t her,
it was no one else. Literally. The news was really new, she hadn?t talked to
him in nearly four months. And so he told her sister the story, but not all of
it, he managed around the parts he could tell. Starting from the Rydyn
Assignment, to the part where he was avoiding Alder because he had things to
do. Which he just told her that it was classified and couldn?t say a thing
about it. He even gave the part where Alder found out he was doing something,
and how he had to keep a tight lip to Alder about his activities. It wasn?t
much, and the look on Kristy?s face was enough to tell him she had questions.
Mostly likely the same or similar questions Alder had. She still looked at him
in disbelief, glaring at him at the same time. He really disliked that look.
But he managed, "Oh, like it?s my fault sis." He caught it and laughed right
after, "ok. It is, but... it?s not like I can tell him. Hell, I can?t even tell
you."
"So? He broke up with you. Either it?s a trust issue..."
"It is," Anthony replied instantly.
"A trust issue," she continued nodding, careful to correctly word her next
thoughts and took several quick breaths, "and why is it he can?t trust you?"
"I..."
Kristy nodded impatiently. He could almost feel her anger rising up like a
scalding wave, "yeah, yeah, you can?t say. If I was the boyfriend here, I would
see why I can?t trust you."
"It?s not like I can talk about it to anyone, you know." He found himself using
the same excuse just moments ago. But it was all he had right now, "It?s
something I have to keep." He looked out the window. He hoped he?d get
somewhere with this situation. He wanted Alder back. Now, preferably, but he
was unsure if Alder wanted to do anything with him at this point. The man had
been proper, clear, and acted as if they never happened.
There was a time he remembered being that way on the Blackwell. Coldness was
Anthony?s friend. Quietness his profession. And now the tables were turned, and
for the awhile he realized he hated the role reversal. He did wonder from time
to time what it felt like being the one not cold and quiet. And now that he
hated it, he definitely hated it coming from Alder.
"Then what are you going to do? You cannot, and I mean cannot! Leave it as it
is. You have to talk to him," Kristy concluded giving the obvious solution to
the mess.
"Yeah I know that."
"Than what the hell are you doing here? Why are you not finding him?" She
glared at him, her fingers tapping against the wooden table.
"He won?t even speak to me unless it?s got something to do with the ship. It?s
hard not to talk to each other when we both work on Operations. But.. He won?t
even look at me. He just goes the second he?s done with whatever it is we both
have to finish together."
Kristy perked an eyebrow, the frustration in her was clearly shown, "and you
don?t listen. Maybe if you stopped blocking so hard, you could hear my other
thoughts as well. It?s going to be hard, that is obvious, and you have to suck
it up and take it. You cannot let him slip away. Anthony, you love him- at
least that?s how I?m seeing it, feeling it. Hell, you?re radiating with it."
"I?m not."
"Don?t argue with the better telepath here." She crossed her arms, narrowing
her eyes and waited for him to challenge that claim.
He didn?t as he looked at her uncomfortably, "and if he doesn?t listen?"
She smirked and sarcastically replied, "yeah, I have all the answers, Anthony.
Look, if he doesn?t listen, then you have to find a way to make him listen.
I?ve talked to him a few times. He?s a nice guy, appeal to his nice attitude."
"Oh, yeah sis, nice attitude. Especially for me."
"Quit being hard headed and just do it. Or don?t you want him back?"
"I do."
"Then shut up and do as your sister tells you. Either you find him and talk to
him. Or I will."
"You can?t do that. This isn?t your problem."
She nodded, "true. It isn?t my problem but it beats having my brother coming
here to sulk."
"Sulk," he looked at her perplexed, "I came here smiling, or didn?t you notice?"
"Oh, you?re right," she smiled sweetly, "you were radiating with that broodish
anti-social attitude you usually have that I?ve grown soo fond of."
"Okay, you?ve made your point. You don?t need to needle me with shit like that."
She laughed lightly, "so, find him. Don?t stay here all day. I don?t want you
in my house until you?ve spoken to him."
Anthony looked at her, and sighed, "I?ll try."
"Don?t try, do it."
