<USS Avalon> "The Thoughts We Think"

The Thoughts We Think
By Senior Lieutenant Elissabeth Marksbury

Interesting... Marksbury thought as Ensign Fenner left her office. She wanted
to see what his reaction to the Tomlinson mutiny would be. Defensive. Every
thing about him had stated the fact - his attitude, his clipped responses, even
his posture. Though she was no psychologist, Lissi knew enough to know that
the defensiveness was most likely born from feelings of failure or inadequacy.
And how would this play out? Would he rise to a new challenge? Or would it
break him?

Best case scenario had Ensign Fenner working harder and more diligently to
overcome those feelings. Looking at his record, she knew he wasn't the type to
back down from a challenge and, in fact, it seemed to drive him harder to
prevail. She very much liked that.

However, he had yet to distance himself from the events of the past. He was
not emotionally detached enough. He, in some way, still felt responsible... or
helpless, she wasn't sure.

And on another level, his entire attitude had irked her. There was almost a
passive/aggressive tendency hidden in there somewhere, and she didn't like
that, nor the quiet and respectful hostility.

Twenty years old... she thought, shaking her head. She, too, had graduated
from Academy and was assigned her first post at that age.

"If you are ever... "debriefed" several times a day for several days, then, in
the later weeks, asked to "clarify" events countless times by investigators who
just want to "double-check the facts," you would have better understanding of
why I am taking offense to your initial unexplained line of questioning."

If you only knew... came the unbidden thought.

"You have a lot to learn, Ensign Fenner," she said aloud to herself. "But it
looks like we'll be learning it together."

Marksbury decided that he was worth the risk. She wasn't used to people
reacting to her so strongly and she found it bothered her to a degree.
However, Lissi couldn't help but think that she was going to like him.
Eventually.
