The Party (Part 1)
Nerys is not looking forward to this party. She does not really understand
this holiday season and soon she will be required to leave the Avalon. Visiting
officers cannot stay forever. She will be forced to leave the man she loves .
. . again. And this time, she has cut all her ties to Bajor . . . What will
she do now? . . What indeed?
"Karg, I really don't feel much like celebrating and, by the way, how did you
get the holodeck during the holidays?"
"I'm the XO."
"Oh, can't we just have a quiet dinner in our quarters?"
"I know what this is about. Didn't I ask you to trust me? Come on. Everything
will be fine."
At Holodeck Two, Karg activates the panel, "Computer, load program: K’Ehloch
37 and prepare for additions."
"Program running, you may enter when ready."
Inside is the driveway of Karg’s parental home near Taos, New Mexico on
Earth. It is an Estancia of the Mexican style with a long driveway, 2 or three
out
buildings and, far in the distance, a Hogan dwelling to the Dinetah (Navajo).
Almost immediately, a dog's barking is heard. Karg shouts, "Cody, hear boy,
hear Cody!" Bounding down the drive comes a black and white, English Springer
Spaniel. When he sees that it is Karg, his tail begins wagging furiously. Cody
tries to lick every exposed surface of skin that Karg presents to him,
lavishing his friend with kisses and little whimpers. It is obvious to Nerys
that
man and beast love each other very much.
The barking soon brings Karg’s aged parents. Commander K’Ehloch and Sara Ah
oh no ma. Karg and his father bump foreheads then hug. Sara kisses her son
then looks ant him reprovingly, "You are too thin!"
Karg hears this same thing every time he comes home. "Father, mother, this is
Kira Nerys . . . she is . . . we are . . . uh, friends."
Sara looks from one to the other with a wry smile, "A little more than
friends I think. You are Bajoran. Is that correct? So your given name is last?"
Nerys smiles warmly, "Yes that is correct."
"Good then, Nerys please call me Sara. There are some things about my son you
should know. Come." Arm in arm they walk toward the house.
Karg calls after his mother, "Mom! . . . no fair!"
K’Ehloch notices an additional pip on his sons shoulder as they walk toward
the house and chat. The part about being "Acting XO" means there has been
trouble on his ship. After they have visited for a while, Karg asks his parents
to
wait while he calls the rest of the party together. "Computer, establish a
link to the holo-suite on Deep Space 9." In just a moment, Julian, miles,
Keiko,
Molly. Jake and Ben appear in the room. There are, of course, introduction all
around. The DS9 holo-suite is working on the Avalon program. Worf is the late
arrival and Karg’s family warmly greets him. A portrait of K’Ehleyr hangs
over the fireplace. Seeing it, it seems he is glad to be here, finally.
Then Karg says, "Computer, establish a link to Major K’Ehneth on the Dragon
Fire." There is no holo-suite on a Klingon vessel so when K’Ehneth appears he
does not move much. Karg says, "Nerys, this is my older brother. His human
friends call him, Ken."
Ken looks from Karg to Nerys and says, "What do you see in my little brother
Commander? I'm a much better catch than he is."
"He said you'd say that."
"Did he? Is that extra pip going to your head little brother?"
From the buffet table Sara interjects, "K’Ehneth, play nice."
The party is just betting under way. There is much more in part 2.
