Josh woke and lay there, staring into the blackness for a moment, wincing at
the dull aching in his chest. He felt as though he'd been thoroughly pummelled.
Closing his eyes again, he focussed on his other senses. He could hear Mac
close by talking to Nikki. Off to his right he could hear the familiar whooosh
of the sickbay doors as they opened and closed. He focussed there, gaging the
distance, listening to the patterened footfalls and making notes when they
seemed to change directions, avoiding obstacles, until he was quite sure he
could manage the route in reverse as well. He remained like that, perfectly
still and silent, until the room seemed to still. When at last he was sure
there was nobody moving about nearby he carefully rose from the bed and made
for the exit.
He almost made it.
The doors whooshed open, he began his exit, when an unfamiliar voice said, "It
seems you've got yourself a little turned around, Mister Garrity. I'm sure you
haven't been released yet. Let me help you back to your bed." Something about
the woman's voice left no room whatsoever for argument. With a sigh, he allowed
himself to be guided back to the oversoft ledge and laid back down.
He'd been so close.
