<USS Avalon> "The Mundane"

The Mundane
By Senior Lieutenant Elissabeth Marksbury

Elissabeth placed the final PADD on her desk and sat back with satisfaction.
Chief of Covert Operations... she smiled. The meeting with Ketchum and
subsequent promotion had come as quite a surprise. But it was so nice to have
her old job back. She had served in the same capacity aboard The Tempest.

Lissi had the remainder of shore leave to get to know her new crew. The Avalon
was picking up several new crew members, especially in security, looked like.

She stood from her desk and walked around her new office. She had changed the
color scheme to shades of grey and blue and the overall effect was rather
pleasing. Her office even allowed for a view port and she was taking full
advantage of it.

It had seemed so strange being away from work. For the first couple of days,
she had enjoyed it, but quickly became restless. Lissi didn't know what to do
with leisure time and so, she had come back to the Avalon with Monroe. They
had agreed to make time to see each other in a day or two. She smiled at the
thought. The arrangement between the two of them just may work, considering he
was nearly as obsessed with work as she. They both understood that the job
came first.

Kaylee had sent her first letter. Once she had come to feel safe, the girl had
acclimated to her new surroundings quickly. She said her parents had been
excited to have Intel take and train her. Lissi could tell that hurt the
little girl, but she was bouncing back and adapting nicely.

Lissi had spent some more time with Maturin doing the little things they used
to do - read, converse, sample wines. It was wonderful that the air was
cleared between the two. She no longer felt awkward or as if there was a gap
between them. And it seemed as if he were moving on to be with Laura and that
was good.

Tucking her thoughts away for the time being, Lissi sat back at her desk and
brought up her messages. 112. That was a lot of catching up to do. Most of
them were general reports on crew's whereabouts during shoreleave, however, and
she was able to quickly file them away. Apparently Commander Sierra had
transferred a great deal of his incoming mail to her in his absence.

One from medical, indicating that over twenty security personnel had yet to
report for their physicals. There was another for mandatory psychological
evaluations as well. She considered letting each of them take care of it at
their leisure, but thought better of it. She didn't want another notice in a
month saying that several officers had yet to report. People tended to avoid
these evaluations like the plague. She couldn't say she blamed them...she
didn't relish the thought of going and answering a bunch of questions from a
complete stranger. But it had to be done.

Mister Dareth had left her scheduling program completed, no more bugs, and she
intended to put it to work immediately. She was going to enjoy giving him his
promotion, another thing passed on to her during Sierra's absence. It would
have to wait, though, as he was on leave in Tennessee and England his paperwork
said.

Getting to work, she went ahead and scheduled the remaining medical
appointments for after shoreleave and sent out the notices. She also sent a
request to the counselor's office for a block of appointments and would wait to
hear back.

That completed, she turned her attention to writing up a notice for the
department heads. It was also near time for re-qualifications in marksmanship
for the crew. They were required to be certified every six months and at least
a third of the ship was due. Including Lt. Commander Manson, she realised,
scanning her PADD.

A promotion, she smiled. He must've fared well in the Rydyn situation. Lissi
grimaced thinking of the mess the two had stumbled into together, glad that it
was over with. The ship was now Rydyn free.

She considered who to place in charge of the re-certs... The first person to
cross her mind was Gregory Orton. His record was impeccable. Or perhaps, Mr.
Benevente. She had liked him a great deal when they met. But they were both
on the "B" team roster under Winters. Maybe she could talk to Zachary and get
his opinion.

Lissi was enjoying this. Even if it was just 'paperwork', she was productive
and productive was good. Her mind had been turning over some very interesting
training session ideas. Her covert ops teams were gonna be some of the best
Starfleet had ever seen. She would make sure of it. They were going to train
and train hard, becoming a single entity, able to anticipate each other's moves
and yet free think on their own. The thought nearly left her giddy.

Picking up a different PADD, she began making notes...
