<USS Avalon> "The Doctor Will See You Now" by Sr. Lieutenant Manson and Ensign Cate

"The Doctor Will See You Now"

Written by Senior Lieutenant Anthony Manson (as Dr. Brookman) and Ensign Lyryn
Cate

Lyryn walked into the infirmary that was bright enough to give her a slight
frown. She looked around and found no one to be there, but then a voice came
from behind her.

"Ah, Ms. Cate, so good of you to come. Now, if you?ll sit here, I believe we
have a procedure to get done today."

Lyryn turned to see a middle aged man with thinning hair dressed in the usual
white jacket of doctors. He had glasses on, which seemed a little odd
considering his vision could be easily fixed. She quickly surveyed the room and
took the stool that was closest to her. Settling her right arm on a console,
she looked up to see the doctor already approaching with two assistants.

"I am Doctor Brookman. I understand you?re here for a memory erasure procedure.
Am I correct? Mustn?t get the wrong patient with the correct memories," he
chuckled to himself. "No, simply put, we?re going to examine your brain. You?ll
feel no discomfort, but do stay still."

Out of somewhere Lyryn couldn?t see, the Doctor pulled out a tricoder and began
scanning her. The other two, one that went to her left- the other to her right-
began to fiddle with something in their hands just before placing it on her
temple. It then bleeped to life.

"Good, this is your primary cortex. And this," as he spoke to himself since he
was the only one viewing something on the console, "is where your memories are
located."

Lyryn then asked, "Exactly how much will be erased?"

"Well, it all depends really. We will leave you with the basic functions a
normal adult has, of course, we don?t need to make a baby out of you," he
chuckled to himself, "And we could leave you with whatever skills you want that
you may have trained for. I?m certain the high ups in their lofty offices won?t
mind."

Lyryn nodded, "Yes. I?d like to keep my skills. I?m being transferred to the
U.S.S. Avalon."

Brookman smiled knowingly, "Ahh, yes, the Avalon. Fine ship she is. My nephew
is serving on board there. If you ever see him, say hi."

"If I remember," Lyryn quipped with the doctor. She found his easy going
manner amusing.

The console bleeped several times before Brookman turned to see. He checked
something on the tricoder and then went back to the console. "Yes, I?ve just
about re-calibrated..."

Lyryn didn?t bother listening him as he rattled off enough medical terminology
to make her head spin. The other two, like iron fillings to a magnet, busied
themselves with adjusting the two devices attached.

"Okay, Ms. Cate, if you will, please go over to the biobed behind you and lie
down. We shall begin the procedure immediately."

"Hold on, Doctor, if you please," Lyryn said. "Could you tell me what you're
going to do? Or give me an idea of what I will remember?"

"Ah, yes, of course, how forgetful of me!" The doctor chuckled at his own joke.
"Basically, we've constructed a new past for you, using all the information
you told us and that we scanned. We just set it all a few centuries earlier.
We wanted to keep the memories as close to your real ones as possible to allow
those neural chains to stay intact. You see, the more we break and tamper with
them, the more likely you are to have strange memories poke through. Wouldn't
want any pokey memories, now would we?" He laughed again. "The most trouble
we've observed with patients in this select memory erasure/memory buliding
procedure is a slight feeling that they misplaced or are looking for something,
but just can't remember what it is. And typically after a week or two that
feeling fades. Not to worry, not to worry. Now, to the bed?"

Lyryn stood and promptly laid herself upon the bed. The doctor hovered over her
with a hypospray in his hand. "What is that?"

"It?s a compound that will put you under for the time being. We can?t have you
awake during the procedure. I assure you when you wake up, you may feel a bit
groggy, but you will be refreshed like you just took a nap." The doctor placed
the hypospray near her neck and then abruptly stopped, "Oh, my dear, what is
going to be your new name? I was told you were getting your identity and name
erased."

Lyryn looked around quickly as her head rattled off all the names that popped
in her mind. One came with particular fondness, "Elissabeth Cate Marksbury. Can
I do that? Can I keep a little part of my old name?"

"Yes, yes, of course. It is an excellent name, dear. Now, see you when you
wake up." A familiar hiss echoed near her ear as her eyes began to slowly close.
