> The larger of the two men stalked forward and slapped the woman across

>
> "Enough," she said forcefully and firmly, leaving no room for argument
> "You took your barbarous liberties before I arrived, leaving them bruised and

>
> The large man flung his arm wide, knocking the woman's grip from him.
> "Yes...Lieutenant," he added reluctantly. His glare said many things to
> Lyryn. She knew that her derisive comments would one day push Brin over the

> Satisfied with his response, she broke the eye contact. "The two of
> you may go and see if Maria needs help. I think that I can handle them,"
> Lyryn said, gesturing to the prisoners.

> "I am Lieutenant Lyryn Cate of the Tempest. You are now my prisoners.
> How shall I address you?" she asked with a slight smile in a very quiet
> and pleasant voice. The irony of being so polite to prisoners whom you have

> "I am Commander Skyler, the XO of this vessel. Why have you boarded
us? We have done nothing to you or even know who you are."
Skyler looked at Phillipa and told her to keep quite. Skyler wondered
what this "Lt." was up to and why they had chosen the Avalon.
"That is all the information that you are going to get. Name, Rank,
and Serial number. You should know that. If you are going to kill us then just
do it, or don't you have the guts for such a dirty job?"
Skyler was pushing her luck and she knew it, but she was not about to
give in to such a coward as this......Lt. She would rather die knowing that
she hadn't given out any information then live and risk the rest of the crew's
lives. She watched as the woman paced in front of them as if she was
expecting something or someone. In the meantime Skyler waited for a chance, any
chance
at all to either escape or to get up and fight this woman.
***
Lt. Cate continued pacing while she was thinking of the proper response
for this Commander Skyler. Finally, she stopped. Turning to look at the
brave woman bound on the floor, Lyryn said very quietly, "Killing takes no
guts."
If she hadn't been looking right at her, Skyler would've missed hearing
the Lt. speak. "What?" Skyler asked, unsure if she heard correctly.
Patiently, Lyryn explained, "I said 'killing takes no guts'. It is my
reluctance to kill you that makes me different from them," she finished as she
gestured towards the door where her subordinates had exited.
> To the surprise of Skyler, the Lt. then sat down cross-legged on the
> floor opposite of her. Lyryn continued, "I don't want to kill you, but you
> don't belong here. It isn't right for you to be here and for that, by law,
> you must die. All of you."
> There was a look of compassion on Lyryn's face as she whispered to
> Skyler the fate of the Avalon. It was obvious there was a great deal of
> inner
> conflict. The soft spoken Lt. continued with, "But I will make sure the
> executions are merciful." There were tears in her eyes.
