<USS Avalon> "The Awakening" by Jr. Lt. Marksbury

"The Awakening"
Written by Junior Lieutenant Elissabeth Marksbury

The voices sounded muffled and Elissabeth turned her head from side to side in
an attempt to make out the words. She wrinkled up her nose in annoyance as
they continued making those 'wha, wha, wha' sounds. She opened her eyes and
tried to blink through the sand that she thought must be there. Everything was
fuzzy, surrounded by halos.

"Wha wha wha," came a voice. It seemed to be friendly. Elissabeth
concentrated very hard on the voice. Slowly, it came into focus and began to
make sense.

"Hello, dear," it said. "You gave us quite a fright."

Elissabeth furrowed her brow in concentration and turned her head to view the
voice. It was a nurse. An elderly and slightly rotund nurse with a pleasant
face and chubby cheeks tinged in pink.

"There now," she said as she scanned over Elissabeth with the tricorder. "It's
'bout time you came around. Can you tell me your name?"

"Elissabeth. Marksbury. Elissabeth Cate Marksbury. Lissi for short."
Everything was beginning to make more sense now.

"That's right, dear. Do you know where you are?"

"I'm assuming it's a medical facility of a sort, but I don't know why I'm here.
I'm supposed to be on the USS Avalon. This isn't the Avalon, is it?"

"No," the elderly woman smiled. "You've made a short detour. You had a little
accident and took a bump on the noggin. But it looks like you'll be just fine.
Do you know the date? Your rank? What's the last thing you remember?"

Lissi told her the last date she remembered, which was the day before. "I'm a
Junior Lt. in security, recently assigned to the Avalon. I was finishing up
shore leave and making my way there. She will be leaving soon."

"Excellent, Lissi. It seems everything is in working order. As soon as you
feel strong enough, you have a message here from an Admiral Pew who would like
to speak with you."

"Oh, yes. Thank you," Lissi said as things came rushing back. Her orders to
the Avalon. Admiral Pew had assigned her to the Avalon, undercover. They
thought that the Avalon may experience some trouble with the Tal Shair due to
their jaunt to the future. She remembered now. Yes, she needed to speak with
the Admiral and apologise for having been detained.

The kindly nurse left the room and Lissi sat up slowly and stretched. She
didn't feel bad at all. A little groggy, but not sore or achy. It was kinda
like she had taken a very long nap. She dressed herself in 'Fleet fatigues and
made her way to the console to call up Admiral Pew. After wading through the
typical red tape, Mordecai Pew's face beamed at her from the screen.

"Marksbury! How wonderful to see you up and about! Feeling better, I trust?"

"Why yes, Admiral, thank you for your personal interest. Please accept my
apologies for having been detained, though I am still not quite sure what
happened."

"No need to worry. Your mission has not been affected. There is a shuttle for
the Starbase leaving at 1600 hours. If you are up to it, I'd like you to take
it. I'd feel much more confident once you are on board the Avalon."

"Of course, Admiral. I shall make it."

"Very well. Your contact for this mission is Sr. Lt. James Maturin. You are
expected to report back once a week. Admiral, out."

Lissi stood up from the console and stretched once again. Her muscles could
tell she had missed her workout this morning. She looked at her wrist
chronometer and decided that she had time for a quick workout and shower.
Looking about the room, she found her rucksack still packed, so there were only
personal details to attend to.

Her workout and shower were complete by the time the nurse came back to
discharge Lissi. She took one last look in the mirror, pleased by her recent
haircut. She had changed it from long loose curls to a short bob and lightened
the colour a shade or two. Lissi didn't really remember what had possessed her
to do such a thing. Time for a change, I suppose, she thought as she tossed
her rucksack over her shoulder and headed out the door.

It was a quick trip to the shuttle bay and nothing eventful on the flight to
the Starbase. She felt a tiny flutter of butterflies in her belly as she
transported to the Avalon. Lissi wondered if she would ever get used to that
feeling.

The Avalon seemed oddly familiar to her, as she had studied the ship's
schematics in preparation for this mission. It took her no time at all to find
the way to her quarters. She settled in and decided to go looking for
Commander Sierra, since she would be working under him for the time being.

It felt good to be aboard a ship again, back into duty. Lissi always enjoyed
her leave, but she always looked forward to getting back to work as well. And
she was very excited to be serving on the Avalon.

Life is good, she thought as she went in search of the Commander.
