<USS Avalon> Survivors Briefing

Survivors' Briefing

Keith was alerted that the Marines had beamed up some survivors, right to
sickbay..

"Phillipa, you have the bridge", he stood up and walked right into the
turbo-lift. "Sickbay", as the doors closed. "That Marine, can't follow
simple
orders, doesn't he know how much I hate to have to deal with Taggert."

Walking out of the lift, and turning, he entered Sickbay. Surveying the
scene, he walked over to the closest standing crew member that he didn't know.

"Ensign, what happened?"

"Sir? On the 'Surge, sir, or down there?" Tran asked, seeming genuinely
confused.

"Both, Ensign. Where ever you want to begin."

Tran nodded, drawing a deep breath to compose himself then began. "We caught
up with the missing shuttle and the Cap'n glanced a blow off her bow. To get
their attention. It got it. They didn't attack us right away, though. It
wasn't until the Breen got in and started firing on us both that things went
nuts. The 'surge started melting sir. Literally melting. She was superheating
and sparking and just melting around us." he swallowed hard, blowing out a
breath. "Twenty four of us made it off. Seven pods. That's it." He glanced back

toward sickbay. "the Lieutenant Commander was the highest ranking officer to
make it off the ship, so he took command. Had us set up camp. Set up triage.
Guard rotation."

"We lost a Burgess to the bugs down there. Just ate the flesh right off of
him. The LC tried to get them off of him, but there wasn't any way he could.
Not fast enough to save him. The the shadow things hit." He lowered his head a

moment. "Took out Porter and Rosas the first night. Three more the second.
Was trying to take out the Doc when the LC got in their way."

Pulling out a PADD, he made some general notes, nodding, while he was
getting the information from Tran. "Who was the Lieutenant Commander?"

"Lieutenant Commander Patrick McEntire, sir. Chief Engineer of the
Resurgence."

"Well, glad to hear he made Chief Engineer. Sorry to interrupt, please
continue."

Tran looked surprised to hear that the Admiral knew the LC, but said
nothing. Instead, he continued. "We had six go awol the third night. Decided
that
the wounded were dead weight and should be left behind, but the LC wasn't
having any of it. They got away, though, with all the supplies. Left us
defenseless. " he looked at the Admiral angrily. "They were willing to let all
of the
wounded there die to save themselves. It would have happened, too, if
something hadn't intervened down there."

Tapping, the commbadge, "Major Phillips, when you and your marines return,
there should be some that were separated from the ones that were found earlier,
I want them placed into confinement." Closing the comm and making more
notes, "And you were saying something intervened, can you elaborate?"

"I wish I could sir. I know that the shadow things attacked, and we were
done for. Our fires were insufficient, our lights were gone. They had us. Then
everything seemed to just...I don't know...stop. Like freeze for a second. When
it started back up, the fires were roaring, we were surrounded by lights, we
had food and water and medical supplies - well bandages, but it's more than
the six left us with - and the shadow things were gone." Tran shook his head.
"I don't know what helped us down there, sir, but something did."

"Well, Ensign, get yourself checked out when you get a chance. We'll also
get you some quarters also, so you can ..."

Rae stormed out of sickbay, nearly running over the Admiral and Tran. Seeing
opportunity, she tried, "Sir, you've got to let me get back down there. As
the last of the Resurgence's security detail you've got to let me finish what
the 'surge started." She looked up at Keith. "Please, sir."

"Well, Lieutenant, if the Major thinks you should be up here... though I
could allow you back down there, but in talking to the Ensign here, you've all
been through a lot. And I don't think that would be prudent, so get yourself
checked over, I'm sure he has it under control."

Rae clenched her teeth, forcing herself not to swear. Once she was certain
she had herself controlled, she said, "Sir, it's because of what we've been
through I need to be down there. We lost our ship. Our crew. My men in
security.
What's it going to mean that we didn't finish what we started?"

"It's going to mean you did all you could, and nothing less. Yes, you might
not have finished your mission, but there are underlying circumstances. Just
as you described. Now, I am ordering you to stand down from wanting to go
down there again, and get yourself checked out. Do I make myself clear?"

Rae nodded, fighting down the anger and sense of failure that seemed to hit
at once. "Yes, sir," she answered once she was sure her voice wouldn't
betray her.

"You and the LC kept us alive down there, Lt. Xavier." "You didn't fail. You
and the LC helped the rest of us hold it together down there. That kept us
alive," Tran told her softly. "That's more than most could have done. It's
enough."

"Guess it has to be," Rae answered before turning and heading back into
sickbay to get herself checked over as ordered.

"Don't be upset with her, sir. A lot of the ones we lost were hers. Security
people. And the LC and her are pretty tight. I think she's just taking it
kind of personal."

Waiting for the sickbay door to close, "I'm not upset with her, and thank
you, Ensign for your assistance. And you better get yourself checked out
also."

"Aye, sir." Tran nodded. "Thank you, sir." Tran headed into sickbay then,
to get checked out and to check up on the other survivors of the 'Surge.

Walking down the corridor, "Ensign Erridim, please arrange for quarters for
the survivors that are in sickbay as they are released. No need to reply."
He reentered the lift, "Bridge".
