Sunsets Gone, Warm Nights Forgotten, and Bitter Tears Wiped Dry.
PT1-Dodge Thomas
His head ached, a throbbing, blinding pain directly behind his eyes and quite
possibly cutting it?s way out of his temples. Dodge clutched his head and laid
it on his desk, staring at the computer screen before him. Moment?s later, the
pain subsided and he looked back up and out the window of his office.
He had been prone to spot migraines for his entire life, mostly when he was
stressed or worried about something. Life had not been stress or worry free for
quite some time, so the migraines were to be expected.
Outside his office, near the warp core, he spotted Ensigns Criswell and
Aguatequa talking and laughing with each other. He felt uncontrollably hostile
at the mere sight of them for reasons unknown to him at the time. His anger was
especially focused upon that saucy blonde Leila. He had been mad at her ever
since the night of Sirius Black?s party.
Dodge had made the unfathomable mistake of attending the party, where he was
assaulted visually by the sights of happy couples practically fornicating on
the floor, on chairs, on tables, against walls and just about anywhere you
looked. It was positively disgusting. A deep resentment had begun to well up
inside of him. He hated her, everything about her, from her beautiful blue eyes
(that resembled those of his late wife), to her long shining hair (different
only in coloration from his late wife?s), to the way she walked, talked,
breathed, laughed and even danced. Damn her! Damn everything about her!
As if she could sense the unbridled hatred emanating from the chief engineer?s
office, Leila Criswell looked up, spotted the somewhat contorted face of Dodge
Thomas looking down at her, blushed and turned away.
?What?s up with him?? Anilla Aguatequa asked Leila.
?I don?t know. He?s been acting strange all week. Ever since I asked him to
dance at Sirius?s party.?
?Hey, that was some party, wasn?t it? I got to dance with--?
?You know, he?s not that bad looking, for an old fogy kind of guy. What do you
think??
?What? Eeww! You can?t be serious. Did you see him at the party??
?Duh. I asked him to dance with me. God, sometimes, I don?t think you hear a
word I say.?
?What?? Anilla smiled and gently punched Leila in the left arm. ?Just kidding.
But seriously, why would you even bother with him? He was such a pill at the
party. He just sat there, pouting and getting progressively more unsocial with
every drink. I thought he was going to kill Sirius when he started to hit on
him.?
?Yea, but Sirius was smashed. What can you expect??
?Exactly. Dodge should have been a bit more forgiving. Hell, it could have been
worse, I mean, Sirius could have planted a kiss on him.?
The two women laughed again.
?Yea, then all hell would have broken loose!?
?You said it!?
The pneumatic sound of the chief engineer?s office doors sliding shut cut them
off. They looked over, only to see the fleeting figure of Lieutenant JG Dodge
Thomas exiting main engineering.
?You see what I mean? If he really cared about either of us, he?d have come
down and talked to us.?
?Men.?
?You said it.?

Dodge stalked down the hallway, casting various dirty looks at a variety of
different people. He had been feeling rather pissy at everyone and everything
for quite some time now.
The doors to his quarters slid open and he was immediately greeted by the
insidious babbling of one Sir Ed.
Dodge perked an eyebrow at the catatonic, yet very verbal hologram. He stepped
back, allowing the doors to slide shut, cutting off the annoying noise.
?Perhaps I?ll take lunch in the mess hall today.? He said shrugging. Not only
was it nearing the date when, so many years ago, his wife and son had been
brutally murdered, but now his close friend, the hologram Ed, was slowly losing
his mind. Life was simply not fair.
Silently, he walked down the hallway, completely forgetting to be rude or even
unpleasant to the people passing him. Deep down, he knew why he was being
pissy, but on the surface he wanted people to think he was calm and collected.
Unfortunately, a mask, even one as well maintained as Dodge Thomas?s, must
crack once in a while, and that time was nearing.
