"Solution by Distraction - Part 2"
By Lieutenant First Class Melanie Redgrave and Ensign Elijah Dareth
"That was bloody brilliant!"
"Wanna do it again? Or want that cotton candy?" he asked. "And I love it
when you say that... 'bloody brilliant!'" he repeated, trying out her accent.
It
came out nothing like the real thing and he laughed at himself.
Melanie laughed too. The attempt at the accent was awful but he was cute
trying it. "I think I’d like the cotton candy," she answered. The two of
them
walked back towards the food vendors and Melanie laughed as she watched the
people around them. It was incredibly kind of Elijah to have brought her here
seeing as how they’d known each other for all of an hour, and wondered if
she’
d have the chance to repay him. "So do you do this a lot? Serve strange
unhappy looking girls ice cream and take them for a roller-coaster rides."
"Actually, I've never brought anyone here before. Most girls just fall at my
feet if I wink at 'em right. You were just a tough nut to crack." He
followed it with another wink, letting her know he was obviously being silly.
He
wondered if there was a chance she was flirting with him. Usually that wasn't
the case - he was everyone's friend. But he didn't mind because it made him
happy to make people happy. "So, no, my methods aren't always the same, but I
do
like to make people feel better. 'Course there's always those real
suspicious ones who can't accept a good deed for what it is. I'm glad you
weren't one
of them. You're fun," he told her, handing her a huge ball of cotton candy.
"Thanks." Melanie said as she accepted the candy. "And I don’t just mean for
the candy. It was nice to get away from .. stuff.. for a while. And as far
as being a trusting kind of person, I kinda can sense when not to trust
someone. Doesn’t always work but it does for the most part." Melanie plunged
her
fingers into the mass of pink spun sugar and rolled her eyes in glee as it
melted in her mouth. "This is worth the extra time in the gym."
"Mmm...definitely," he agreed swiping some of her cotton candy. "So you
gonna tell me what's been hiding that pretty smile of yours or is that a 'tell
you when I've known you for more than an hour, ice cream, roller-coaster, and
cotton candy' sort of problem?" He found a less crowded fairway and ambled
that direction.
Melanie happily shared her candy as they walked. "It’s sort of a family
thing. See, I went looking for some answers and found them, but I’ve made a
mess
of things by doing it." She knew that was pretty vague, but for now it would
have to do. "Not really sure why I thought everything would just fall into
place, but it hasn’t. Not sure it ever will."
"Hmm...your cousin's uncle's brother married a Klingon and it's causing
contention, huh? Yeah, I could see why that'd be a problem," he grinned,
taking
her mind off it again. She just wasn't ready to talk yet. And that was fine.
He liked just listening to her speak. "How about the carousel?" he asked,
gesturing to it.
To be continued...
