Sins of Commission
by Lieutenant Second Class Alder Shimbrodus
I got out of the crew lounge after having a rather lonely lunch. Last I was
aware of, Anthony had gone for a meeting and I hadn?t seen him since. I went
about my day, and while I expected to see him at his usual station, he wasn?t
there. So there I sat, alone for today. I was almost finished and I wondered if
Anthony was at our quarters. I pushed the food away and made my way to the
turbolift. I stopped on deck four and headed for our quarters. The place was
empty, but I did find some things interesting on the table. I hadn?t notice
them at all until now and when I looked, it was just a simple isolinear chip.
But a tricoder, a padd, and some other small equipment drew my attention.
"Computer, identify this chip."
"Identification invalid."
"Clarify," I frowned, all of the ships systems were cataloged. They had to be,
in order for repairs to be done.
"There are no records of this chip in use on this vessel."
Interesting. I placed the chip onto the monitor and took the padd. It had notes
on it, a few long codes I couldn?t really decipher, and some other information
I hadn?t bother to read.
"Computer, read chip and," I activated the tricoder and also placed it with on
the terminal, "the tricoder."
"Access Denied."
"Authorized by whom?" My own personal terminal telling me I was restricted.
"By Senior Lieutenant Anthony Manson."
"Override."
"Unable to comply, enter security code."
"Lieutenant Second Class Alder Shimbrodus. Authorization Epsilon Four."
"Unable to comply."
I entered a code in. It was Anthony?s and it was the only code I knew. It was a
common one, but I was hoping that the code was high enough to get me in. How
nice that he was keeping things from me in my own quarters, with my own
terminal no less. The code worked.
"Computer download information saved on the tricoder. Cross reference with scan
of the chip."
"Analyzing," a few moments later, "Complete."
"What is it?"
"Chip contains several access codes not used with Starfleet personnel. Codes
are embedded within the computer core."
"Who embedded them."
"Unknown."
"Was it Lieutenant Anthony Manson?"
"Negative."
I had to ask, "have this codes been used by Lieutenant Anthony Manson?"
"Affirmative."
"Can the codes be removed?"
"Unknown."
I looked at one of the codes that blinked on the screen, "activated the third
code."
"Security surveillance have been disabled, internal sensors are offline on
decks two through 9. Site to site transporters activated."
How did he get all these codes? How did he know about them?
"Computer, are there any records of site to site transports upon activation of
this code."
"Affirmative."
"Who?"
"Lieutenant Manson."
"Where to?"
"Unknown."
I sighed, too many unknowns.
"Any records on the time of security being disabled?"
"Negative."
I knew he was lying. I was just hoping I was wrong. Wrong to not trust him.
Wrong to think that he?d hide something from me. "Computer, deactivate code."
I shut the terminal off and took the padd. There wasn?t much there. Times,
locations, several primary objectives that only the chip would be the source of
answers. Not that it helped much other than making me doubt Anthony more than
ever. And he did lie to me. It became hard to give him the benefit of the doubt
that maybe he was protecting me. Maybe it was nothing. But then it didn?t
explain his behavior in the last week. I needed to know, and I needed to know
as soon as he walked into this place.
I contacted Waterson to takeover for me as I waited for him.
It?s time I know.
