<USS Avalon> Silent Tears

Silent Tears
by Senior Lt Caine Reilly McKinsely & Hannah Jefferyi

Caine knocked on Hannah?s bedroom door. ?Come on sweetie, please stop crying
and come out and talk to me,? she pleaded through the door. The only sound
that answered her was the soft sobs coming from the child that had grown to
mean so much to her.

Sighing Caine rested her head against the doorframe; she could feel her
headache coming back in full force. ?Okay Hannah, you take your time and when
you want to come out and talk to me, I?ll be here waiting just for you,? Caine
said and waited a few more moments before turning and walking back out into the
living room.

Their talk had not gone well, Caine reflected silently to herself. She had had
it all planned out in her mind, how she would tell Hannah that she still had a
living Grandmother that wanted to meet her and that the two of the had been
corresponding for a bit. Caine had assumed that Hannah would be excited and
happy to have a living relative out there that wanted to see her, only the
quite opposite happened, Hannah immediately assumed that Caine no longer wanted
her and hated her and was trying to get rid of her.

Caine sat down on her couch and put her head in her hands and took deep
breathes, trying to fight the headache. She really wished that Javan was
there, to help her out and support her some through this endeavor, but that
wasn?t possible, he was on shift, besides, he didn?t really know what was going
on with Hannah. But still, a part of her wished that he were there to give her
a hug and tell her everything was going to be okay. Only he wasn?t there and
Caine knew that this was something she would have to handle on her own, this
was between her and Hannah.

Time seemed to creep by as Caine sat her on couch waiting for Hannah. Finally
the door to Hannah?s bedroom opened and the small child came out, a blanket
tucked under one arm and a thumb in her mouth. Her eyes were red and puffy
from crying and tear trails snaked down her cheeks. With out a word she moved
over to Caine and stood beside her for a few moments.

Caine sat back on the sofa and opened her arms, without any words passing
between the two, Hannah climbed up into Caine?s lap and curled up, allowing
Caine to wrap her arms around the young child?s body. No words were needed as
both child and woman sat there, silent tears running down both faces.
