Signal Hill Park
by Lieutenant Second Class Alder Shimbrodus
You know, vacation is exactly what it?s suppose to be. And yet, here I am, on
earth with my cousins and I don?t feel as if I?m on vacation. The fact that
Kathleen and Henry were sitting on the opposite side of the table looking a
little on edge only got on my nerves. Not only that, but they just sat there,
staring at me or exchanged looks constantly.
I didn?t realize my morning was going to be filled with quietness and mystery.
If I wanted that, I?d have Anthony around. Okay, I didn?t mean that. Partly. I
crossed my arms, frowning, "something you two want to tell me?"
"Yes," Kathleen said.
"No," Henry said at the same time.
I blew an impatient breath, "which is it?"
"Well, we?ve been meaning to talk about the Company."
I sat up, that certainly got my attention, "what about the Company?"
"It?s been two months, Alder, and we?ve been considering your offer about
moving in and overseeing the Company. We?ve even picked out the schools for
Donna and Peter." Kathleen had exchanged another look at Henry.
"And?"
"Well," Henry, "we have no place to stay there."
I smiled, I thought I worked this all out when I asked for his help. "I told
you, you can have the properties my dad owned."
"Oh, ok. I mean, if that is alright," Henry said uneasily.
I knew that look, all to well. It wasn?t the company. Henry had been busy this
morning, and it was putting him on edge.
"Alright, spit it out."
"Anthony came by." Kathleen said first.
"What?" My back suddenly became a whole lot straighter, like sitting up wasn?t
straight enough, "what did he say?" It was visible as Henry rolled his eyes,
not liking the fact she had so quickly answered. But I liked that she replied
quickly, it beat dragging it out from them.
"He wanted to talk to you," Kathleen replied, "he came in the morning, but
left. I didn?t know if you wanted to speak with him, so I asked him to call
later."
"Oh..." I looked away. Well, at least he still was trying. Can?t say the same
for myself. Call me unforgiving, harsh, whatever you want, but I just couldn?t
let it go.
"Did he say anything else?" I looked at both of them. They shook their heads.
"He?s a nice guy, Alder.. You gonna speak with him?" Kathleen looked a little
hopeful. I guess she did like Anthony. Can?t blame her, I loved the guy. Or..
It was so close to it, I couldn?t tell the difference. I was going to find him.
I spoke with Kristy once, it wasn?t very long, and we only introduce ourselves
that time.
"I.. Thought about it."
"Then go," Henry replied. I looked at them and they saw nothing wrong with just
talking. I did miss him. I did care for the guy. Maybe I seemed a little
carefree about the entire thing. I mean, I ignored him enough. I didn?t like
doing it, but then again, I was trying to distance myself from him.
"Not that easy."
"Coming up to a stranger?s house that you know your lover is staying with is
even harder. He went finding you, Alder. At least meet him somewhere."
"But," I got up from my seat. Yeah, I felt uncomfortable, "I don?t know what to
say to him."
"Then let him talk."
"Should I? The last time I let him, he went spewing forth stupid lies that we
both knew it wasn?t leading anywhere. And yet, he blatantly lied."
"Fair, enough. But you?re a good guy, Alder. Let him talk. You love him right?"
Kathleen seemed to be the motivator for this. Funny thing really is that I
usually talked about my problems to Henry, or Matt. Made me wonder just exactly
how much she knew about me.
"Yeah, I do."
"Then talk to him." Kathleen sat back, smiling. Gee, it was so easy for her to
say that.
Alright, I?ll talk to him. Or, rather, I?ll listen to what he has to say. It
better not be the same story, because I?ll just leave. I left the room, heading
for the small computer in the den. I sent a message to him, telling him to meet
me tonight, on Signal Hill Park.
"What did you tell him?" Kathleen and Henry both appeared at the doorway.
I looked at them; they didn?t need every bit of information, "I?ll see him."
