Shore Leave
Timeline: The first day of declared leave from the Avalon
Karg was at his tactical station when the captain announced that they were
going home.
Home.
He would actually be able to see his mother's round face with her bright
shining eyes. And his father, he would be proud of his children no matter what
they did but Karg’s promotion to Lt. Comdr. Would make his father's chest
puff up
. . . just a little. It gave Karg pleasure to imagine the fuss his mother
would make over Nerys.
Before going home, Karg and Nerys took a picnic lunch and a couple of horses
and rode out on the Mesa outside of Taos. They had much to talk about now that
they were away from the ship. You can cross the gorge just north of the
civilian airport and ride up into the hills. It was early spring and still a
little
chilly at this altitude.
Karg knew of an opening among the piñon pines. The spot was actually on the
Apache Reservation but no one ever seemed to mind. The picnic back pack
contained a feast; Blue Corn Tomales, a mild salsa made from yellow Bell
peppers and
Roma Tomatoes with Blue Cord Tortilla chips and the beverage of course was
Blue Shy Soda, Raspberry flavor (still made in Albuquerque). The desert was
special, a Flan covered with Raspberry honey. (The honey is made in only one
place
in the world, a bee farm just outside Taos that happens to be located right
next to a commercial Raspberry farm. Tasting it is an unforgettable experience).
After eating . . . and other things . . . they lay on a blanket to enjoy the
day, look at the sky and talk about "little" things. After a while Nerys began
to look serious. "Karg?"
"Yes, . . . what's the matter?"
"We've been trying to set a date for some time now. This dessert is so
beautiful. Why don't we get married while we are here?"
"Yes, why don't we! That's a wonderful idea but what about your family?"
"At maximum warp, Worf and the Defiant can have them here in 2 and a half
days."
After they kiss, Karg asks, "Nerys, are you sure? Have you any misgivings?"
"Let me see, your sense of humor can be a drawback . . . but no, my love, I'm
sure this is the right thing to do."
Karg smiles as they embrace, "OK. Lets go see my parents."
