Shifting Down
by Doctor Felicity Roan and First Lieutenant Karg White Feather
Felicity took a deep breath and trudged her way to the bridge for her first
watch as Second Officer. She was dreading this moment more with every step, but
wasn't certain why. It dawned on her that this position would require
considerable interaction with humans that were not sick or dying. This might be
a
problem. She pondered making the crew sick and dying, but figured that the
Captain and most of StarFleet would frown on that idea. She pasted on her smile
and
moved to the doors.
On the Bridge, Karg was making the last of his connections for the holiday
party he was planning for Nerys. There were special links to DS9 and Bajor as
well as using his father's holodeck program of their home in Taos, New Mexico
on
Earth. His shift on the Bridge was nearly over.
Felicity looked down at her toes and jumped when the Bridge doors actually
opened at her approach. She hoped no one noticed, and quickly glanced around
the
room to spot anyone witnesses. Luckily, she found none.
"Lieutenant Felicity Roan, reporting to relieve you Mr. Karg. I hope your
first shift was a good and uneventful one. Any points of interest on the
evening
that you'd care to relay?"
"No, Doctor. Its been a quiet shift. Steady as she goes. We'll be flying
closer to some inhabited systems so be careful if you spot anything on long
range
sensors. Engineering has been doing some routine repairs on 3 EPS conduits.
Security has four officers sleeping it off in the brig. They are just out of
the
academy and apparently have no taste for synthahol. They can be returned to
duty without incident but if I were you I’d give them all something
unpleasant
to do when they wake up. That's it. Have a good shift."
Felicity chuckled at the thought of the Ensigns in the Brig from a wee bit
too much enjoyment. "Will they ever learn?"
"In any case, thank you. I wanted to let you know that I've enrolled in the
Command courses for later this afternoon. I found an instructor who was willing
to take me on very short notice. I have to admit, I wasn't expecting to need
Command courses more than what I had as the Chief Medical Officer."
Karg could hear a nervous laugh in her voice. Karg had these courses at the
Klingon Warrior Academy but didn't have to rush their completion. "Felicity,
if I were you I’d start with the tactical and strategy courses. You'll need
them right away. Ship operations and technical prowess courses can come next I
think. Let me know if you need any help. If the captain checks in, I'm hosting
a
big party on Holodeck two, he is welcome to join us, as are you if you like."
Felicity nodded with a smile, "Thank you Karg for the offer. Depending on
how the shift goes, I may very well join you and as soon as Captain Ketchum
appears I will ensure he is aware of your party. With all the stress and
tension
that we've had during the last week, it might be a good idea."
"Good night." Karg offered with a nod and a turn to the doors. He lingered
for a moment to see how she would do.
She gave him one last glance and turned to face the green bridge crew.
"Maintain course Ensign and keep be apprised of any objects in our path.
Let's
have a quiet morning folks." She sat slowly into the Command Chair, which
seemed
more than just a bit too large for her and tried to review the shift reports
from the departments. She knew those courses were going to be less than
exciting. Let's hope this shift was just as uneventful.
