<USS Avalon> "Seeing Through Mist"

Seeing Through Mist
Anthony Manson
and
Elissabeth Marksbury

He finally stopped tapping the PADD, but the next bad habit was tugging at his
uniform continuously. It was getting increasing humid as Anthony walked through
the corridors, or was it just him? Nerves, they don't control you. They
don't... Anthony kept repeating as he hit the chime to Marksbury's office.

"Come in," came the offhand reply as Elissabeth was buried elbow deep in files
she was concentrating on. She looked up as Anthony entered and started to offer
him a smile until she saw the look on his face. "What's wrong?"

"I?m just confused, a little," Anthony said as he took a seat. "Remember what I
told you about Sierra? And that sibling thing going about?"

"Distinctly."

"I don't get it, I think they just said that to... disorient me, or something.
?Cause.. Sierra has no family."

Her brow furrowed and she couldn't believe what she was hearing, "What?"

"I did some research. You know, paranoid and what not." Anthony shrugged, "And
the Betazed central records show that Sierra's family are all dead. Even signed
off by the appropriate officials."

"Surprise, surprise." Elissabeth dropped the PADD she was reading to the desk
and looked Anthony squarely in the eye. "How did I know Sierra's brother's name
was Tel if I didn't look it up? I'll tell you why - because the man told me his
name. And you just provided the connection to Sierra that I suspected." She
shook her head. "Don't change your story on me now, Anthony. I'm too close to
the truth."

"Uh, okay. I didn't know his name was Tel. Thanks for enlightening me. But
that's not the point. The point for me is, why would 'Tel' say he is Sierra's
brother... when they're all dead? I mean, look at it," Anthony pushed the PADD
across the desk.

"And so what? Anthony, you know where I really grew up. And what do the records
say? San Francisco, California, Earth. Records mean nothing."

Inwardly he was getting frustrated faster than warp speed, Anthony stood up,
"Take it as you will." Outwardly, he projected an image and slammed it against
Marksbury's mental doorstep. A vivid picture Anthony made sure to convey.
THEY?RE WATCHING YOU. "Just thought it might help some," he shrugged.

Elissabeth winced as Anthony's message invaded her mind, but tried not to show
it. The picture conjured up the tension and pain behind her eyes once again,
despite the painkillers in her system. "Anthony," she began, trying not to slur
her words. "I'm too close to finding the truth to stop now." Feeling that now
too familiar tickle of blood against her upper lip, Elissabeth reached for a
tissue and lowered her head to rest against her hands with elbows propped on
her desk.

Don't think they won?t off you in a second, Elissabeth. I?m trying to avoid
that, stop pursuing. Let it the fuck go, please. "But what if all loops around?
What if you don't find anything?"

"I've already found things and I know people who know how to find more things,"
her voice came out in a whisper, the pain in her head becoming white flashes of
firing synopsis. "I'm not afraid to pursue the truth."

You don't need to die for it, Marks. Let it go. "It's not that, it's just..
well look at Section 31. What?s stopping them from running you around? What
makes you think you can trust the person you know to find things?"

"Anthony, stop worrying. I can take care of myself."

"Can't help it, Marks," Anthony said, "I gotta jet. Take the information as you
see fit. I'll talk to you later."

She watched Anthony walk out of her office through blurry eyes. Crossing her
arms, Elissabeth laid her head down on them and waited for the pain to pass.
