El-Kainah Ngaio

El was able to work through the rest of his shift in Medical without
any problems. He was even able to get some sleep. It wasn't a lot, an hour at
most. But he was lying there on an examination table in one of the exam
bays. He was again thankful that there wasn't much to do at the moment. But,
he
had a feeling that could change. There was a great increase in the tension on
the ship and El could feel it.

He was still lying there on the exam table when he heard voices going
by. He stayed still and didn't move. He recognized one as Dagny's voice.
She was talking to one of her friends. "Yeah. He was talking to that new
one...the one that doesn't know who her father is?" Her voice dripped with
contempt.
"Siobhan? She's nice." The friend said, and Dagny glared at her,
angry that she wasn't helping her trash her ex-boyfriend. "It isn't HIS fault,
Dagny, He can't help being so cute." El couldn't recognize who the other voice
belonged to. "Don't glare at me like that Dag. You said yourself that he
was extremely jumpable."
And just like that. The voices were gone and El was alone again in
the dark corner of the exambay. He sat up and frowned to himself in the dark.
It sure was seeming like some of the other impressions he was hearing about
Dagny were accurate. And he didn't like it at all.
He frowned a bit but his shift was over now. He watched Dagny leave
sickbay. He wanted to talk to her. To try to straiten it out. To figure out
why she was acting this way. But she was gone. He lowered his head.
He had been rather disappointed in Dagny's behavior. The more he was
learning about her, the more he was beginning to regret his behavior with her.
That was when another nurse went by. He saw she was about to leave but she
stopped and went back over to him.
"Doctor?" Her voice was tentative. Quiet. But also very sweet.
"Doctor Ngaio isn't it?"
El nodded. "Yes. Did I forget to thumbscan a chart?" He sort of
looked up from the deck.
She laughed slightly. "No. I just wanted to check on you Sir. You
seemed upset about something?"
He nodded again. "I suppose I was." He looked at her a moment.
"Ex-girlfriend problems." He lamented.
She half chuckled and smiled at him. "No offense, Sir, but I am not
surprised." She half blushed. "Dagny was trouble at the Academy too. I am a
little surprised that you hadn't heard about the swath she cut through the
corps of cadets."
He chuckled remembering that she did have quite a few boyfriends while
she was in San Francisco. "I guess I never really put that much stock in
rumors." He offered. "I never paid attention to what other people were saying
about classmates. So many things can influence their opinions."
It was her turn to agree. "I suppose that is true. But when
confronted with facts..." her voice trailed off. "Well, lets just say I have
some
experience with Ms. Taggert's temper." Her voice held the bitterness she felt
toward the young nurse. "But I heard that you and the new medtech were talking
earlier? Is that right?"
       El nodded.
"Well good for you. I mean, well it isn't really any of Dagny's
business really." She started. "I mean it isn't like you are actually seeing
her
officially. At least that isn't what I heard." She gave him a nervous laugh.
 And he smiled in return.
"No not yet anyway. She is nice though. She was one of the first
people I met when I came aboard. She's attractive and fun." He smiled at the
young woman.
"And you shouldn't have to apologize for finding her attractive. Or
that she finds you attractive. I mean there are a lot of girls aboard that are
attracted to you." She blushed a little. And El smiled again.
He checked his chrono. "Well, thank you Michelle. I appreciate your
taking time to say something." He smiled at her again. "I have a breakfast
appointment." He smiled even broader. She sort of shook her head and smiled
in return as El gathered his belongings and headed out of Sickbay.
