<USS Avalon> Rerepairing the lifts

Patrick McEntire and Joshua Garrity had done their level best to stay clear of
all the intrigue. They were engineers, after all, not detectives. They're job
was the ship. At least, that's what Mac kept telling himself. He knew Josh well
enough to know he was curious. He couldn't help but have questions. He also
knew full well he'd never ask them.Three words to anyone in a single day was
downright chatty for him, and everyone knew it. The effort it would take to
actually ask the questions was simply beyond him. As for Mac himself, he just
wasn't in the mood to get all caught up in it all. He listened to the daily
scuttlebutt with less than no interest. At least, that's how it appeared.

Today they worked on the turbo lifts again. Once again, they were slow to
function. It seemed every time alpha shift repaired them, gamma shift had to go
back and do it right. Mac couldn't wait to see what the problem was this time,
as they kept getting more and more...interesting...each night. Josh climbed
effortlessly up and out of the lift, then waited for Mac to follow. The moment
Mac had tugged himself up through the portal at the top of the lift, Josh began
climbing. "Hey, wait up," Mac called after him as he, too, began to climb. "I
gotta work out more," he muttered to himself for the hundredth time. Josh
paused impatiently for all of a half a minute before taking off again. He was
completing the job by the time Mac caught up. Out of breath, and embarrassed at
having done no more than tag along yet again, Mac asked,"What was it this time?"

Turning beet red, Josh held up what was left of the flimsy, lacy garments that
had been jammed in the gears. Not for the first time, Josh wondered if perhaps
this wasn't accidental.
