<USS Avalon> "Remembering" Cmdr Skyler

"Remembering"
Cmdr Skyler

Sitting in her quarter's, Skyler was curled up on the couch reading one of
Henry's old medical books. The pages were discolored and worn, but they still
brought back good memories of falling him around to the various places where
most doctor's wouldn't go.

She was semi deep in thought when she heard the Captain announce that the
crew was to report back to the ship in eleven hours. She wondered where they
were off to this time. Pushing that to the back of her mind she returned to
Henry's book of "Medicinal Cures Using Natural Ingredients."

As she read one page after another she remembered how Henry treated people
and how they treated him. Being the only doctor around for miles in an area
that was populated by poor people, he was often paid in a variety of ways.
Some
days he would bring Georgia a good cookin hen or a pig for roasting. Other
times he would trade his services for whatever services he may need. Such as a
new roof or a new barn. He rarely got paid in money or credit chips and this
was fine with him.

He would get up before the sun and Skyler would follow him around. Most
people got a kick out of her following Ole Henry around and would feed her if
it
was close to supper time. Of course there were times she would sneak off and
go find the nearest stream and spend the day playing in it or fishing. Of
course when she got home, Georgia would be sitting on the porch with the
willow
branch waiting for her. Life was so much simpler then.

Now there were hypo's, tricorder's and other fancy equipment that could be
used to treat someone and payment was not needed. Sometimes she wished for the
simpler times. After a good hour she put the book down and walked over to
her desk where she could check on the ship's status. According to the
dockmaster, the engineering crew on the station had made the final repairs to
the
Avalon as well as restocked their supplies.

They had lost some crew yet they had also received some new crew. She
changed into her uniform and left her quarter's. She wanted to make one last
walk
through of the ship before they left for whatever Starfleet had in store for
them. She enjoyed walking through the bowels of the ship, finding or trying to
find every nook and cranny she could. She had yet to discover them all, but
then she had plenty of time to look.
