Reliving the Past
By: Summer Khellian

Mhia pushed open the heavy wooden doors, far enough for her to slide in. She
dropped her bag into a chair. The hall was bitterly cold and still. Her good
mood was suddenly as dark as the winter sky. Mhia knew something wasn't right.
Her father was to have arrived that morning, back from a senate meeting. Mhia
slowly made her way across the front hall, calling out.

"Mother!!! Father!!!! Grandmother!! Grandfather!" Mhia's voice trembling
with each name, her body numb to the cold. But there was no response by the
time she reached the doors to the sitting area. Without fear she opened the
doors only to find the room cold and dark. Mhia was now running across the
room, leaving the doors open behind her as she quietly made her way to her
father's study.

The door was slightly ajar and without hesitation she pushed the door open
as she called out. "Father?" But what lay before her was yet another dark room.
Mhia slowly backed away from the doorway, unsure of what was happening. Then
she saw a shadow move across the hall and voices whispering. She managed to
hear. "Mhia.... death...."

Mhia took off running down the corridor, trying to get as far away from the
voices as she could. If she could hide before anyone realized she was home she
would be safe. She wanted to leave but she knew that would be dangerous, they
would see her run across the grounds.

Mhia kept looking behind her as she ran through the house, making sure the
people she heard speaking weren't following her. As she rounded a corner she
ran into a man she didn't seem to recongize. She looked up at him, terror in
her eyes as she backed up and ran down the hall. She heard the man yell behind
her "Mhia! Come back here!" She heard his footsteps as she disappeared into a
room. "No.... no, they will not get me." She muttered under her breath and made
her way across another dark room and out into the court yard.

Mhia looked up and saw her grandfather. She yelled to him "Grandfather, were
are mother & father?"

As he strode closer, his face was expressionless. "Mhia, come. We must find
your mother and grandmother." He managed to keep his voice smooth and steady.

"Grandfather, where is father?" She asked him, as she tryed to keep up with
her grandfather. But he didn't answer. 'Maybe he is comming home late.' Mhia
was trying to convince herself that everything was all right, but deep down she
knew it wasn't.

As her grandfather pushed open the doors to the sitting room. Now there was
a fire burning in the stone fireplace and the room was warm. Mhia was still
confused. No one would tell her what was going on.

Finally after what seemed like hours, her mother spoke up. "Mhia, come
here." She patted the seat next to her, her eyes were red and her voice was
hardly above a whisper.

Mhia hardly heard her mother, but obeyed her anyway and sat down next to
her. Savannah forced a smile, but it could not hide the pain that was reflected
in her eyes.

"Mhia.... I must tell you something."

Mhia knew something was wrong because her mother not speaking in Rihannsu,
but in a Terran Earth language her mother taught her called English.

"How do I say this?" Her pain clearer with every word. "Virh... your father.
Won't be comming home."

Mhia felt her heart skipping a few beats. "Why? Must he remain away longer?"
Mhia had a feeling that she knew the truth, but she wanted to desperatly to
believe otherwise.

"I wish it where that easy my sweet daugther." The tears was streaming down
her mother's cheeks. "But the truth is he was..." She took a deep breath. "He
was asassinated this morning."

Mhia slowly backed away from her mother and she reached out to try to
comfront her. "No. It cannot be." She was screaming in pain and anger. She
didn't know what else to do.

Before she knew it, she was on her feet running once more out of the room.
She heard her mother call to her but she ignored her. She also heard her
grandmother tell her mother "Let her go, she will be fine."

Mhia slammed her bedroom door shut but it didn't make her feel better. She
felt like she was watching herself as she pulled out the dagger she had. She
grasped the blade tightly and in one swift moment pulled it across the palm of
her hand. She felt the warm blood pool up in her hand and she knew it was not a
dream.

Mhia opened her hand slowly to see what she had done. Green blood spilled
from her hand and she screamed.

Summer broke out of the trance of her medication at the sound of something
metal being dropped. It took her moment to realize she was standing in the
middle of her quarters, there was blood dripping from her hand and her dagger
laying at her feet. She dropped to her knees, physically and emotionally
exhusted. She was reliving the night her father died.

After a moment Summer rose to her feet. She cleaned up her wound herself.
She was not about to go to see the doctor just so the doctor could tell her she
needs to see a consouler and talk about her father's death. She got enough of
that from her mother and her grandparents who forced her to go as a child.

Summer decided that she needed some sleep but she lay in her bed wide awake
staring up at her dark ceiling. Her mind racing. As she was slowly drifting off
to sleep, she tried to fight off the nightmares that were slowly invading her
thoughts. But all she could see was her father and she watched him die over and
over again.
