"Regrets"
By Lieutenant Second Class Elissabeth Marksbury and
Lieutenant First Class James Maturin
She felt the fool. Waking up, Lissi sat up gingerly in bed. It was still
early, but James wasn't there. She remembered everything from the night
before. Every last humiliating detail - except how she ended up actually in
bed and wearing one of James' t-shirts. She had no memory of that. Surely we
didn't...
Slipping into a pair of pants, Lissi padded silently into the living room.
James was asleep on the sofa. Well, that explains that. Surprisingly enough,
she didn't sport a terrible hangover. Just a mild stuffy-headed feeling, most
likely from the dehydration. She replicated a glass of orange juice and sat
down at the table to think through how stupid she'd been and how many people
that she owed apologies to.
It wasn't long before her stirring about woke James up. He didn't say anything
to her as he went to the bathroom, showered, and changed. Lissi didn't blame
him. She didn't want to talk to herself, either. When did it all get so
complicated?
"'Morning Lissi," James said as he came in to fix himself some breakfast.
"Mm-hmm," she replied glumly. He sat down opposite her and didn't say a word.
She couldn't stand the silence any longer and asked, "No lecture?"
"What could I possibly say that you can't think of on your own? You do
remember, right?"
"All but how I ended up in bed with your clothes on."
"You can thank Laura. She said your dress was too pretty to ruin by passing
out and sleeping in it. She's the one that helped you to bed. I was ready to
just dump you on the couch. You wouldn't have known any different."
She just nodded quietly. He continued, "This isn't a lecture. You know what
you screwed up. But I do want you to apologise to Laura. She was a hell of a
lot more understanding last night than most people would've been. I think she
was almost as worried about you as I was - and she had no reason to be. It
says a lot about her character. I couldn't pay her even half the attention
that I would've liked because I was babysitting - making sure you didn't hate
yourself this morning after spending the night with Mister Chatterbox." His
eyes flashed angrily again.
"I will," she told him. "I'll tell her thank you and apologise. I really am
sorry. For everything." Her words were solemn and nearly silent.
"I think that memory procedure worked better than we thought it did. You are
not Lyryn. Not completely. The girl I knew wouldn't have pulled such a stunt.
You need to get your life together, Elissabeth Marksbury, before you hurt
anyone else - yourself included." He walked out the door.
Lissi laid her head down on her arms and cried.
