Recovering
Karg awoke on the floor of the brig. He was alone in his cell and the force
field was on. The cells he could see from his seemed to be empty and there was
no guard on duty. His muscles were stiff making it hard to move. Even for a
Klingon, heavy stun is no picnic.
Karg couldn't just sit here and wait for them to execute him. He had to try
something. Pulling out the bed, he sat down and pondered the options this room
offered. He'd need a cutter to get to the service corridor and there was no
clearance in the ceiling. That left only the door.
Karg moved to sit, cross-legged nearer to the force field. "I wonder if I
could make these emitters overload." Lets see, there must be a proximity
indicator that increases output if you get too close to the door and a sensor
to
analyze resistance in case I were something large like a Gorn or a Bolian. "So
how
long can they run at maximum output?"
Karg removed on of his boots. It's sole was synthetic and totally
nonconductive. As he placed the shaft into the opening the force field began to
hum and
twinkle a little. After five minutes or so, the boot seemed to be getting a
little hot. Removing his other boot, he used it as a prop and settled back on
the
bed to see what would happen.
In a few minutes, an alarm began to sound on the unmanned security desk. Karg
got up to feel the walls near to the emitters. They were getting warm. Maybe
this is going to work.
When Karg was unconscious, one of the Tempest crew set the Security console
to be monitored by OPS. One of these invaders now hurried to the Brig to see
what the problem was. When he arrived, he saw Karg near the door and the boots
in the field. "Hey, cut that out!"
Karg smiled back, "Make me."
"Make you?"
"Yeah, what's the matter? You chicken ?"
The guard wags his head, "I can't believe this."
Karg starts clucking, "Buck, buck, buck, buck, buck, buck, buck, buck, buck."
Obviously, it would be better for Karg if the guard tried to smack him."
The security panel is showing the increasing heat of the emitters. Karg will
have to be taught a lesson. Leveling his phaser he demands, "Stand back from
the entrance." The guard intends to transfer Karg to another cell minus his
boots.
Karg and his brother K’Ehneth used to practice these timing tricks when they
were young. It will take the guard 3 seconds to do what he intends. One to see
the button, another to activate it and a third to reacquire the target.
Karg started running when the guards attention was fully on the button. Karg
was through the door at the instant the field was down. His left hand kept the
guard from making a lethal shot and his right elbow came up and struck the
man on the temple. Karg was 6 feet 2 inches tall and 245 pounds and he was able
to concentrate most of his weight on the hit. The poor guard suffered an
immediate severe concussion from which he would not recover.
Retrieving his Dk'tahg and the guard's phaser, Karg watched the guard breathe
his last and said to him, "Beware the Ides of March."
