<USS Avalon> Re: Something to Celebrate (Scott, Danaan)

"Something to Celebrate"

After leaving the Admiral, Delaney walked off the bridge in something of a
daze. She entered the turbolift and started to order it back to the deck of the
main shuttle bay, then realized that wasn't right. Not anymore. Now she was
seven decks up, on eleven, in main engineering.

The lift stopped on four, and Delaney looked up to see the ship's Tuathan
counselor stepping inside. She moved over to make room for her.

"Morning, Miss Scott. Were are you headed?" the felinoid purred.

"Engineering. I, uh...got promoted," the younger woman said absently.

Cailin Danaan turned to her with a wide smile, her gentle, seemingly
ever-present purr reminding Delaney even more of the Caitians she resembled
and yet
didn't. "You did? That's wonderful! That a new pin in there?" She indicated
the box the other woman held.

Laney looked down. The box still sat unopened in her hand. "Yeah."

Cailin took it from her gently, opening the lid and smiling yet again. "Oh,
this means you're back to full lieutenant---you must be so pleased," she
said, taking the gold pin out of the box and putting it on her collar for her.

"Yeah, there's that."

Cailin looked at her. "What else is there?" she asked, her tail twitching
curiously.

Delaney faced her then. "I'm Chief Engineer now, too."

She had paused then, but before the other woman could speak, Laney went on.
"It feels weird. I mean, I knew I was gonna have to wait at least five years
to get a promotion, if I ever got one. I've been out of the slam five weeks,
Counselor, and Ketchum's making me a senior officer."

"You're waiting for the other shoe to drop, I take it? To borrow a Human
expression?" asked the counselor.

"Yeah. Kind of," Delaney admitted with a shrug.

Cailin placed a warm, clawed hand on her arm. "Ens---Lieutenant, I think
it's only natural you feel this way. But you must remember that the admiral
would not have promoted you had he any true reservations about your
capabilities.
Considering your record, which I am sure is the reason for your
'too-good-to-be-true' feeling, I've no doubt he may keep a close eye on you
for a while.
However, that's no reason for you not to let yourself feel good about this,
be happy about it, and enjoy it."

"And do my job and not screw up, eh?" she said with a little cheek.

The Tuathan purred a laugh. "Yes, that too. Felling better now?"

Delaney reached up and felt the two pins, now side by side, as there had
been nearly seven years ago. It occurred to her that if she wanted her
superiors
to look past the convicted felon, she was going to have to learn to do the
same. Doesn't mean it's going to be easy, she thought.

But to Cailin she said, "I do. In fact, I'm really beginning to feel the
excitement now. I mean, wow! Chief Engineer! I thought I would always be happy
with shuttles but this...this is too incredible! Now I've a whole starship!"

Cailin laughed again. "That you do. And I think we should celebrate."

Until then, the lift had held them on four, having not been ordered to
continue to deck eleven or to go anywhere else. Cailin took that moment to
say,
"Computer, new destination: Deck Nine, please."

The lift began to move again as Delaney said, "Come to think of it, a sundae
with fudge brownie chocolate ice-cream, chocolate sauce and candy sprinkles
sounds good right about now. It is going on lunch time, after all."

Not to mention she would have to let Farraday know he was on his own in the
shuttlebays. That is, until she assigned someone else to work with him. She
could do that now, order people around. Not that she had any plans to abuse her
new rank, but knowing she could gave a little boost to her good mood.

She was smiling fully as she and Cailin exited onto deck nine and headed for
NineForward.
