My Grandmother was much the same, and she wasn't even British!  Her family 
came from Kiev... and her tea had to be sweetened with saccharine tablets!  
When 
we were very small, we called them "tea pills" -- and they were kept in a 
little three-legged holder with a bell on the top that really rang, so of 
course 
we kids constantly rang it...  ;)
