"Quite Contrary"
by Ensign Mary O'Donnell
"Damn it all to hell and back." Mary felt like picking the console up off the
desk and launching it through the window.
The message had been quite explicit, she was to report to the USS Avalon before
the end of the day. Having held her seething until the Detail Commander had
signed off, she now wanted to break something.
"Why the fuck did it have to happen now?" The loss of her rostered rest day in
order to pack was bad enough, what really pissed her off was this would
automatically cancel the leave she organised for next month.
Picking up the nearest free-standing object on her desk, Mary readied herself
to hurl it at the wall.
As it left her hand, rage turned to horror. The noise the old fashioned
photo-frame made when the wall stopped it, tore at her heart. O'Donnell crossed
the room and gingerly plucked the image from the debris. A sharp pain lanced
from her index finger causing her to drop the photograph.
Blood welled in the cut. Tears rolled down her cheeks. This is just too much!
The curdling scream issued from her lungs would have given a Klingon pause.
A voice came to her, 'Deep breaths Mary-Mary, controlled deep breaths'. Her
anger began to subside as she obeyed the internal instructions. Picking the
photo up again, she spoke with sadness to the subject and owner of the calming
tone, "Sorry Moy, I won't be able to see you graduate after all."
